eBay will “transfer” data of its sellers to the Treasury to “facilitate” tax compliance

eBay reported the other day that it has reached an “understanding agreement” with the Tax Agency, to facilitate tax compliance. This agreement is included in the scope of the indirect sales tax made by the sellers who use the virtual stores, managed by eBay, to offer their products.

And the agreement consists, according to the official note, in the «the transfer of information«, which will have as its exclusive purpose the fulfillment of the functions attributed to the Tax Agency, by mandatory regulations.

eBay also intends to promote among its sellers greater knowledge about the correct fulfillment of their tax obligations, mainly, in terms of VAT and other indirect taxes.

According to eBay, in the current context of crisis, platforms like them «they play a crucial role for the Spanish economy, helping SMEs, the main productive muscle in Spain, to move towards digitization and internationalization as a strategic transformation in the medium and long term«. The promotion of a better knowledge of tax legislation will therefore complement the activities that eBay already carries out for its sellers. But, above all, Initiatives like these are going to help the Treasury a lot.

eBay has accepted the collaboration proposal of the Tax Agency with the common objective of the fight against tax fraud in electronic commerce, but always “guaranteeing the maximum protection of sellers who operate through its platform.” According to the company “eThe agreement will respect data privacy at all times» and the regulations on professional and business secrets.

This agreement is similar to the one signed by the company, in 2018, with the UK Revenue Agencywhich establishes a collaborative relationship with online marketplaces to promote VAT compliance by online sellers.
