Among the many repercussions of the war in Ukraine, there is the consequent increase in the price of fuels. Around the world, the numbers continue to climb at the pump, hitting records not seen in years. If the majority suffers from the harshness of the situation, some take advantage of it. We are obviously thinking of electric carsvery happy not to have to go to a gas station to refuel.

Something to give some ideas. When comparing the volume of electric car sales in February compared to the same period last year, the finding is clear. In 2022, consumers bought 79% more electric cars than in 2021. In Europe, there are 160,000 new registrations in just one month, i.e. an increase of 38%. The Tesla Model 3 is still the most popular car among enthusiasts.

Consumers flock to electric cars to avoid paying for their gas

On the rest of the podium, we find the Kia e-Niro and the electric Fiat 500. On the manufacturers’ side, it is BMW who emerges as the big winner, taking over 9.6% of sales. The brand is followed by Mercedes-Benz and then by Peugeot. In addition, this gain in popularity is slightly less significant among hybrid vehicles, since an increase of only 6% is recorded.

It is therefore difficult not to make the link with current inflation. Indeed, the global automobile market has meanwhile dropped 7% over the same period. On the other hand, it could be that the phenomenon is slowed down in the coming months. If the war in Ukraine leads to soaring prices at the pump, it could also do so on the price of cars themselves. However, electric cars now represent 20% of total sales in Europe.
