Electronic Arts cancels the next Project CARS and buries the license

Electronic Arts stops investing in Project CARS, while a new opus was in production at Slightly Mad Studios. The staff assigned to this development will now work on other motorsport games of the group, such as F1, GRID or WRC. The future of the license, inherited from the acquisition of Codemasters in 2021, is in question. That of DiRT, whose last game dates from 2020, would also have been sealed.

The video game market is consolidating. In recent years, many acquisitions have taken place, particularly at Microsoft which announced at the beginning of the year the acquisition of Activision Blizzard, following that of Bethesda. While this latest financial transaction is still being validated by competition authorities around the world, the merger of Microsoft and Activision is already a reality for players and professionals in the sector.

Under these conditions, it is therefore not very easy to be independent. The proof with Ubi Soft which was almost bought by Tencent (which nevertheless made an agreement with the Guillemot family). And recurring rumors claimed at the beginning of the year that Electronic Arts could be swallowed up by Disney, Amazon or Apple. To remain independent, these companies must make choices about projects. Continue to invest in some. And drop others.

EA discontinues Project CARS license

Today, the Games Industry site published an article confirming the closure of a motor racing license at Electronic Arts: Project CARSa legacy of the takeover of the British publisher Codemasters. Our Anglo-Saxon colleagues first learned the information from an internal email announcing to the developers of the next installment in the series, in production at Slightly Mad Studiosthat they will soon be working on another game. According to Games Industry, several titles on the same theme are in production at EA and Codemasters: F1, WRC and GRID.

A spokesperson for Electronic Arts then partially confirmed the information. He explains that the Project CARS series no longer responds to the experiences requested by players. Electronic Arts prefers to invest in areas where the firm believes it can bring something new. The next Project CARS is therefore canceled. But not only: the license will be shelved. Quite simply. Another car license could suffer the same fate: DiRT. But this has not been confirmed.
