My experience with the Samsung Galaxy S21 after three weeks

Well into 2021, brands like Samsung have decided to advance their usual schedule of presentations to boost the sale of their flagships looking forward to the next few months. The latest launch of the South Korean firm comes from the hand of the S21 series, with the Samsung Galaxy S21 as the entry model to the range .

The phone arrives on the market with a slight facelift and a series of features that represent an involution compared to the Galaxy S20 launched in 2020 . Or at least as far as technical characteristics are concerned, as the company has focused on rounding out the experience of its trio of smartphones through optimization and a new Exynos 2100 processor that marks most of the novelties present in the three devices. Is it worth spending the 800 euros starting the phone in the middle of the world crisis? I have had the opportunity to test the Samsung Galaxy S21 for just over three weeks to answer that question.

A design that gets rid of curves and glass

The last generation already It was a disruptive change in the design lines that Samsung had defended at all costs for more than five years by flattening the curve of the screen in the Galaxy S of the day. With this new iteration, the company has completely got rid of the curves by integrating a totally flat panel . In fact, the only visual difference that we find with respect to the Galaxy S20 is there, in the absence of curves, which helps to eliminate at a stroke the false touches that were generated when brushing the edges with the palm of the hand.

In this sense, the experience improves significantly, although the grip sensation is not as comfortable . Personally, I prefer Samsung’s latest decision with this S21, since one of the problems I experienced with the Galaxy S20 + was precisely the generation of false touches.

Beyond the visual aspect From the front, where we find most of the changes is at the rear, starting with the construction materials. On this occasion, the manufacturer has opted for polycarbonate to reduce the weight of the entire assembly and improve its resistance to falls. Although it has a matte pearlescent finish that helps improve the feeling in hand, the truth is that does not manage to replace the feeling of a good glass . We are talking about a phone that is dangerously close to the starting price of 900 euros, while the materials used do not correspond to the price range.

When we lay the phone on its back on a surface, the camera module makes it limp from one of the sides, something that can be partially solved with covers.

Still with everything, the chassis it feels stiff and of very good quality , probably due to the design of the edges, which are still aluminum. In fact, I would dare to say that we are facing one of the most beautiful mobiles on the current scene, not only because of the choice of colors, but also because of the finish on its back, and specifically, the cameras, which are now available. mounted on a more elegant module if possible than last year. To this must be added that the size of the entire set is not too large (6.2 inches). Let us remember that we are facing one of the most compact high-end terminals of this new generation, something that will please users with small hands.

Screen : same quality at the expense of lower resolution

The screen is another of the components where Samsung has put the scissors with respect to the generation of 2020. And it is that although we find a panel practically identical in specifications (Dynamic AMOLED, HDR10, 120 Hz…), the company has chosen to reduce the resolution to 1,080 points . Noticeable? The truth is, yes. Is it a problem on a day-to-day basis? Not at all. The experience obtained with the panel is very similar to that of the Galaxy S20, positioning itself as one of the best panels on the market .

Although it is not one of the most compact, feels really comfortable in hand.

The colors, the brightness level and the general contrast are practically perfect . During the day, the 1,300 nits of brightness allow us to see the content of the screen even with the light falling directly. As for the colors, although they are somewhat strident and vivid for my taste, we can always play with the One UI settings to modify the scheme for a more natural one. The tactile sensation is not far behind either, as the panel calibration is really good.

Outdoor visibility is one of the best we can get in a high-end mobile.

And what about 120 Hz? The experience in this aspect does not differ from that of previous models of the brand. The difference in this case is found in the adaptive frequency system that Samsung has designed to change the panel frequency depending on the applications. In general, the fluidity of both the system and the animations are the best we can find on Android . And that we find one of the heaviest customization layers of the current panorama, although we will talk about it later.

Small but bully: performance to match the greatest

We come to the capital section of the Samsung Galaxy S21. The novelties of the new Samsung flagship are marked by the processor, which in this case is a Exynos 2100 of 5 nanometers and eight high and low performance cores . It is accompanied by 8 GB of RAM and 128 and 256 GB of internal storage.

The experience that this whole set offers us is what is expected in a device with similar characteristics. Running applications and processes in the background are not a problem for the phone . The 8 GB of RAM allows us to keep a multitude of applications in memory without having to reload their content. To this must be added the update frequency of the screen, which gives us an extra fluidity when navigating through the different system options, as well as the compatible applications and games.

Speaking of games, the experience is practically perfect. In titles such as Asphalt 9 and Call of Duty, the phone lends itself to choosing the highest graphic settings for the best experience at the highest frame rate. And that’s what the device gives us: uncompromising raw performance. In my three weeks of testing I have not come to appreciate any kind of slowdown or lag , so the optimization work of the company is commendable, a work that is rewarded with the promise of updating the device for 3 years, as confirmed by Samsung. e a few months.

The same happens in applications like Samsung Dex, which allows us to turn the phone interface into a whole desktop system by connecting the phone to a monitor external. At no time does a performance decline even be seen when we use several applications at the same time. When it comes to temperature management, the phone successfully manages processor performance, as only a slight increase in temperature is noticed in the camera module, which coincidentally is made of aluminum. Unlike the last generation, the Samsung Galaxy S21 lacks overheating issues.

    Another of the most controversial points of the Samsung Galaxy S21 has to do with its photographic configuration, which replicates the specifications of the Samsung Galaxy S20 . On the one hand, the phone has three cameras on its back of 12, 12 and 64 megapixels. The first sensor acts as the main sensor, while the rest of the cameras use a wide angle lens and a 3x telephoto sensor to give the phone more versatility.

    Broadly speaking, the differences with respect to its predecessor are non-existent. The company has argued this decision with the improvement of the Artificial Intelligence algorithms and image post-processing , as well as the addition of new photography modes. These improvements come through computational photography, since now the module that manages the applied Artificial Intelligence is twice as fast as that of the Galaxy S20.

    My experience with the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra after one week of use

    To this we must add that the image processor is now capable of separating the subject from the stage to manage image parameters independently , which should result in better color calibration, better blur in Portrait mode, and better detail in textures. But, are all these improvements true?

    If we focus on the main sensor, which in this case starts from a resolution of 20 megapixels and a focal length f / 1.8, the sensations are very similar to what I got with the Samsung Galaxy S20 + . On the one hand, the definition of the images during the day is correct for the type of sensor we are facing. The same happens dynamic range: Samsung’s post-processing manages to raise the detail of the images in the dark and light areas, yes well a supersaturation of the colors is seen when when we photograph areas with vegetation or open sky .

    It is worth saying that this way of acting on photographs is typical of Samsung’s philosophy. Personally, I consider the interpretation of the colors somewhat exaggerated , although I understand that the preferences of the users go in that direction. Another of the shortcomings of this processing is found in the white balance. In images where green or blue predominate over other colors, the phone tends to color the rest of the elements of the image , giving a rather little filter sensation true to reality. The same happens, for example, when sunlight falls directly on an object or body: the processing tends to make the images more yellow .

    Regarding the behavior of the camera at night and in low-light scenarios, Samsung pulls out its chest with quite decent results thanks to the size of the pixels , 1.8 microns, and processed. The definition of the images is correct, as well as the level of brightness. In certain areas, yes, a wash of the textures is appreciated when the light is scarce, something that the Night mode cannot correct. In fact, this mode is limited to correcting the white balance of the images , with a more natural appearance and less orange than that of the images captured with the Auto mode.

    In this sense, the performance is well below brands such as Huawei or Apple , for example, since the brightness obtained does not differ much from what we obtain with the default photo mode. In the open we cannot play with astrophotography either, since the exposure time is not high enough. On some occasions, even it is possible to see certain burned areas , a sign that Artificial Intelligence is limited only to raising the lights in the most illuminated areas.

    All these feelings also apply to the video section. In general, the image quality is similar to that obtained in pure photography, with a slight saturation that is applied mainly to the predominant colors . In the field of stabilization, Samsung has also done a good job, although it is still far from what Apple offers, for example, with its iPhone 12 and 12 Pro. Where a substantial improvement is seen is in autofocus, which for fin gives good results when focusing on a close object , unlike the vast majority of S20. It is worth highlighting the integration of a manual video mode that allows us to take out all the possibilities of the sensor, with control of lights, focus and many other image parameters. Also the possibility of recording video in 8K resolution at 24 FPS and in 4K at 60 FPS. Of course, the phone in this scenario will overheat more than normal.

    Having talked long and laying the main sensor, we have to talk about the secondary camera, which in this case uses a 12 megapixel sensor, a wide-angle lens and a focal length f / 2.2 that limits its possibilities in night photography. The sensations with this sensor are practically identical to those of the Samsung Galaxy S20. When the light and the conditions are good, the result of the photographs is good , although not as defined as the main sensor, especially with regard to detail and dynamic range.

    Things change when we are faced with somewhat more complex light conditions, since the butter effect of the textures appears to draw light from where there is none. In other words, the results of this sensor at night are certainly disappointing , something that after a few generations can not be allowed. Fortunately, Samsung’s work in the video section with this sensor is good , having a wider field of view, which gives us the possibility of play with stabilization. In fact, the phone incorporates a mode called Super Stable whose results are quite decent, at least during the day, since at night, its obvious deficiencies make it practically useless.

    We arrived to the third and last camera from the rear. Based on a 64 megapixel sensor with a 3x telephoto lens and an f / 2.0 focal aperture. In this case, the overall results are halfway between the primary sensor and the secondary sensor. On the one hand, the width of the lens allows us to capture close objects with great detail , at the same time that it gives us some play to replace a non-existent macro.

    The resolution of the sensor also invites us to perform digital zoom up to 6 or 10 increases without losing too much detail . Once we exceed these figures, the detail of the bodies is completely lost, especially when we reach the maximum zoom level, which in this case is fixed at 30x. Fortunately, Samsung allows us to keep the focus of an object by holding down the part of the image that we want to focus on.

    Other One of the possibilities that this sensor gives us is related to portrait photography. Increasing the lens when photographing people, objects or animals produces a much more natural blurring than the conventional Portrait mode , although somewhat less pronounced.

    During the night, yes, the sensor loses a lot of detail. The same happens when we record video with this camera. Unless the scene is well lit, the characteristics of the sensor greatly limit the capabilities of the phone , to which we must add that the camera lacks optical stabilization , while the stabilization of the videos is conspicuous by its absence.

    Forget the photographs of the Moon with the telephoto lens.

    Finally, we have to talk about the front camera, which consists of a 10-megapixel sensor and a focus aperture f / 2.2. In this case, the improvements are not very noticeable if we compare them with those of the previous model , since it is the same sensor in broad strokes. In general, the images are defined, although a somewhat exaggerated correction of the software is appreciated when we photograph somewhat irregular skins and / or textures, with a beauty effect that has little or nothing to do with reality.

    This effect it is even more betrayed when the light falls on the scene, since the algorithm tries to raise the lights at the expense of the detail of the images, with some frankly improvable results . The good news is that the wide field of the lens allows us to play with group photography, although Samsung shows the cropped image by default. Regarding the video section, there is a improvement in stabilization and the treatment of lights and shadows , something that is also appreciated on the main sensor of the rear camera.

    A sound at the same level as the rest of the set

    Samsung’s high-end range is characterized by having one of the best sound sections on the market. And the Samsung Galaxy S21 was not going to be less. Accompanied by two speakers, one next to the charging port and the other at the top of the screen, the sound experience is at the level of the rest of the set .

    Although the maximum volume does not It is as high as what could be expected, the sound quality gives us an experience in line with what is expected from a phone with such characteristics. In general, the equalization in its factory settings is more than correct and allows us to enjoy all frequencies even with the volume level at its maximum. In fact, the speakers do not saturate the sound at any time, something that is appreciated if we are going to use the phone as a portable speaker in training sessions, for example. Yes, I have come to appreciate a lack of strength in the lower frequencies , although this may be due to the size of the device and the speakers, limited by the dimensions physical terminal. In this sense, the experience is one notch below what the Samsung Galaxy S20 last year already offered.

    Another negative point of the terminal is that we do not find any type of port for headphones , so we will have to use an adapter. Added to the absence of this port is the elimination of the headphones that the brand usually includes in the box, headphones signed by AKG that marked the hallmark of Samsung’s high-end range.

    Biometrics improves over last year’s model

    As It has been common in the terminals of the South Korean manufacturer, the Samsung Galaxy S21 uses two biometric security methods, an on-screen fingerprint sensor and a software-based facial unlocking system. From the first it should be noted that grows in dimensions up to 1.7 times compared to the screen sensor of the Galaxy S20 . But is it a real improvement over the 2020 model?

    The overall experience is much more satisfying than the one I got with the Galaxy S20 +, something that I have been able to appreciate both in response speed and on the surface and range of recognition. Unlocking is fast and consistent , regardless of where we place the finger. And it is that being an ultrasonic sensor, we can get to unlock the phone even with wet or stained fingers

    If we talk about the facial unlocking system that the phone incorporates, the experience is similar to the one we get with the fingerprint sensor: fast and efficient , although somewhat limited if the light does not accompany . This is because it lacks a supporting ToF sensor, which limits its capabilities in terms of safety and reliability. In any case, the operation is decent.

    An autonomy with mediocre figures until the last update

    As with cameras, Samsung has decided to keep the battery capacity of the Galaxy S20. We are talking about a capacity of 4,000 mAh, which in this case is accompanied by a 25 W charging system. In theory, autonomy should me praise for processor energy efficiency . But is it really so?

    The truth is that no. Or at least that’s how it was until the last terminal software update. On average, the mobile has been around 5 hours of screen with a more conversational than demanding use (WhatsApp, Discord, Gmail, Twitter, Telegram …) and the screen refresh rate set to 60 Hz. If we activate the variable frequency with 120 Hz option, the figures drop slightly to 4 and a half hours .

    In general, the autonomy of the Samsung Galaxy S21 throws quite disappointing figures, or rather, it threw. And it is that after the last software update, these figures have increased dramatically, yielding a autonomy closer to the real 7 hours of screen use than the initial 5 . Unfortunately, the update was not notified until a few days ago, so I have not been able to play with the different settings of the device to test the battery.

    The controversy of the charger

    The absence of the charger in the box has separate potential phone users. Building on the movement encouraged by Apple, the new Samsung flagships lack a power charger: we only find a charging cable that serves to use other chargers. So far so good. The problem is that the company does not give us the possibility of opting for a charger for free like other manufacturers, so the speed will depend on the charger we have at home.

    To all this We must add that the charging cable is USB type C at both ends , while compatibility with third-party chargers is limited, not to mention that Most manufacturers opt for proprietary charging systems, which completely limits the fast charging of the device. I have tried using three different types of chargers and none have shown any symptoms of compatibility with Samsung’s proprietary fast charge. It should be noted that in this scenario I have noticed a sudden increase in temperature, especially when using the phone while it is connected to the power, although without making excessive use of it (games, multitasking, Samsung Dex …).

    The result? More than 1 hour and a half of waiting , something inconceivable in a phone that is assumed to be high-end. And it is that Samsung forces us, in one way or another, to go through the box if we want to enjoy the fast box of the device in its entirety.

    The point of improvement for Exynos processors is still coverage

    So is. And this is something that has been around for a few generations; proof of this are both the Samsung Galaxy S10e and the Samsung Galaxy S20 + that I was able to test a few months ago. Overall, the signal obtained indoors with Virgin Telco using the Orange mobile network has been quite disappointing . It is worth saying that the coverage in the area where I live is usually quite scarce, although it usually improves with phones with Qualcomm processors. Outdoors, things improve significantly, although coverage is below other similarly priced mobiles.

    Focusing on the behavior of the rest of the connections, the truth is that the experience has been positive. The range of the WiFi is higher than that of other phones that I have been able to test, reaching a good connection about 20 meters from the router with several walls in between . Yes, I have come to appreciate a loss of signal when grabbing the phone from the top. In any case, the experience is positive.

    Regarding Bluetooth, the connection with external devices is correct and practically immediate. The latest iteration of the connection (Bluetooth 5.1) allows us to move away even several meters from the source without suffering quality or signal losses . In this aspect, the behavior is as expected in a high-end phone. As a highlight, the phone has USB 3.1, which gives us the ability to connect the device to external monitors through an adapter and Samsung Dex, Samsung’s desktop system that turns the phone’s interface into a complete system. of windows.

    The performance of this function is more than correct, coming to replace the functions of a conventional computer in the most basic tasks . Of course, when taking the phone’s battery as a power source, autonomy will suffer significantly, so I recommend you use a USB hub with USB type C input.

    Conclusions, opinions and price, is it worth it?

    After analyzing all aspects of the Samsung Galaxy S21 in detail, it’s time to draw conclusions, which depend, of course, on the price. As of today, the official price of the phone is 860 euros. The question is the following: is it worth it compared to other options on the market?

    To analyze the virtues of the phone we must take into account its size , which in this case stands at 6.2 inches. Starting from this premise, the truth is that Samsung’s bet is one of the most complete that we can find in the market . In fact, the only device that can compete face to face with this is the iPhone 12, along with the iPhone 12 Pro to a lesser extent (the phone exceeds 1,000 euros starting). The question that we will have to ask ourselves before opting for one model or another, therefore, is related precisely to the operating system rather than to the technical characteristics of the device.

    Although on a personal basis I would not pay 860 euros for a mobile phone, it must be recognized that Samsung’s option is the most complete in its price range. As a whole, the Samsung Galaxy S21 offers a balance that few brands can offer today : an exquisite design, an outstanding multimedia section, a photographic set competent and an autonomy that although it does not stand out compared to other options on the market, it does seem sufficient for most users, especially if we take into account its size. To this must be added incentives such as Samsung Dex, the additions of the Samsung customization layer and many other functions such as wireless charging or reversible wireless charging.

    Experience with the Samsung Galaxy S21 + after three weeks of use

    The conclusion is that, although it is true that we are not facing the best mobile on the market, we are probably facing one of the most competent options in the compact mobile catalog with Android. If we take into account the depreciation that the cell phones of the Asian firm usually suffer within a few months of their departure, my personal recommendation is to acquire the phone once its price drops to 700 or 750 euros . This does not mean that the Samsung Galaxy S20 is a superior mobile if we pay attention to the purely technical characteristics. However, the company has managed to fix some of the shortcomings of the 2020 model, such as temperature management, autonomy or the focus of the cameras.
