The Swedish giant Embracer intends to make the most of the Lord of the Rings license. In the presentation of its results for the 3rd quarter of 2022, the company confirmed the launch of 5 new games by 2024.
In 2022, the face of the video game industry has been turned upside down by major takeovers, starting obviously with the historic acquisition of Activision-Blizzard by Microsoft. But that’s not all, since the Swedish giant Embracer has also distinguished itself by buying in particular the Western studios of Square Enix in May 2022.
The company has recovered under its purse Eidos, Eidos Montreal, Crystal Dynamics or Square Enix Montreal. Studios that have worked on cult licenses like Tomb Raider or Deus Ex. But it was obviously not enough for Embracer, which in August 2022 confirmed the purchase of the rights to all the works of JRR Tolkien.
From now on, Embracer will be able to adapt Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit and all the other literary works of the famous British author at leisure. And precisely, what are the Lord of the Rings stamped projects planned by the publisher?
5 Lord of the Rings games coming before 2024
On this point, we had some answers in the company’s latest financial report. We learn in particular that the company plans to launch no less than 5 Lord of the Rings games in the next 24 months made “with licensed third-party partners”.
Note that we already know some of these titles. The Gollum game, developed by Deadalic Entertainment, is due to land this year after several release delays. The game will put us in the shoes of Gollum and the emphasis will be on infiltration and stealth. We also expect in 2023 a certain The Lords of the Rings: Return to Moria. In this game, which will combine survival, construction, exploration and action, four players will take control of a group of dwarves determined to recover Moria, their native land now occupied by the Goblins. Regarding the other three titles, the mystery remains complete.
If we put aside the Lord of the Rings license, Embracer plans to launch no less than 94 games during the 2023/2024 fiscal year. Among them, highly anticipated titles like Dead Island 2, Remnant 2, PayDay 3, Warhammer 40K Space Marineor Alone in the Dark And Hyper Light: Breakerthe continuation of the excellent Hyper Light Drifter.
