ETHOS is born, a data exchange platform for early warning in critical infrastructure

A group made up of various entities dedicated to the cybersecurity of operating technologies and critical infrastructure advocates has announced the birth of ETHOS, an open source technology platformand supplier agnostic, with which share early warning information about threatsand do it anonymously, between entities in the cybersecurity sector, and governments.

ETHOS (Emerging Threat Open Sharing, which stands for Open Emerging Threat Sharing) is comprised of the following entities: 1898 & Co., ABS Group, Claroty, Dragos, Forescout, NetRise, Network Perception, Nozomi Networks, Schneider Electric, Tenable, and Waterfall Security. The platform’s resources are available via GitHub, and anyone who needs additional information about it can check out its community web page.

The platform will offer companies and critical entities a neutral option to exchange information, with the aim of combating the constantly increasing number of cyberthreats. It is an open source solution that will always be active, and that works as a kind of hotline to link the information provided by many security vendors. Its purpose is to identify anomalous behavior to strengthen security defenses across all sectors, as well as ensure more effective communication and government support is obtained.

For now, ETHOS is in its initial phase of cooperative development, a period in which its developers will seek to fulfill the objective of sharing data for early investigation of threat indicators. It will also aim to discover new and innovative attacks. Since it is an open source initiative, any individual or entity can contribute to ETHOS, its direction and its future development. Applications to join the platform in general will open next June.

Eric Goldstein, CISA Deputy Director of Cybersecurityhas recalled that «theThe magnitude of the threats faced by operators of critical infrastructures, and in particular Operational Technology networks, requires an approach to information exchange based on collaboration and interoperability. CISA stands ready to continue to support community-based efforts to reduce the silos that prevent timely and effective information sharing. We look forward to collaborating with these communities, including the ETHOS community, to improve early warning and response to potential cyber threats, while adequately protecting sensitive information about our nation’s critical infrastructure community.«.
