First image of the AMD server processor, what a beast!

This year we are not only expecting the Ryzen 7000 with the Zen 4 architecture, but also the server processors under the same architecture, baptized under the code name AMD Genoa. What’s new for the next server and data center processor from AMD?

The first making use of the Zen 4 architecture in a configuration of 96 cores and, therefore, 12 CCD Chiplets. Of the second in cambo it is said that it will make use of a derivative of the architecture called Zen4c, in a configuration of 128 cores and optimized for cloud computing.

Well, considering that we have already seen preview photos of the Ryzen 7000 and that AMD confirmed a simultaneous launch of the next processors for PCs and AMD Genoa processors for servers. We have to say that we were quite missing the fact of having the first images of its counterpart for servers. Especially to see if the architecture leaks have been confirmed in the end.

This is what AMD’s next server processor looks like

For the first time we can see the first images of AMD’s next server processor, under the code name Genoa, placed on a motherboard. This will be made up of 96 Zen 4 cores and will have a 24 subchannel DDR5 configurationso we are talking about that on the motherboard there will be 12 DIMMs in total. A figure that may seem exaggerated, but we must remember that we are talking about a processor for servers and not for home computers. At the moment it is not clear whether we will see a workstation or Threadripper version of the EPYC 7004if so, it will use a different socket.

The socket information had already been leaked in last year’s GIGABYTE leak, with which we were also able to learn new details of AMD’s Zen 4 architecture. So its appearance does not surprise us, since as can be seen, the new SP5 processor socket maintains its specifications. With dimensions of 7.5 cm high and 7.2 cm wide, which allow it to house a powerful processor of 96 cores and 192 threads in totall. Although this will rather be in its highest configuration and versions with configurations as small as 16 cores are expected.

As for a version with V-Cache, AMD has not yet confirmed its existence, but if it exists, we are very sure that it will use the same socket. Also, the higher bandwidth of DDR5 has the issue of higher latency and this is detrimental for some applications. Moreover, it is rumored that this could appear with Bergamo. Although this is rather speculation today. After all, what matters is that we already have the first real photo of AMD Genoa on a motherboard.
