Five terms you have to know to be more (technologically) sustainable in 2023

For many people, the resolutions for the beginning of the year involve joining the gym, starting a new diet or reinforcing an English that is more than rusty. And although many people fail over and over again in these attempts, many others also manage to achieve their goals by dint of tenacity and will. And what purposes do companies make at the end of each year? Most of them are well known: grow more, sell more, go further. But on the more “soft” side and at a time when the price of energy increasingly determines what kind of decisions are made, being more sustainable emerges as a new need. And how can companies be more sustainable? First of all, knowing exactly what sustainability consists of.

To do this, below we show you which terms should be mastered if what you are looking for in 2023 is to move towards the development of a company that is more committed to the environment. Next, we propose one of those invitations that cannot be refused: a webinar in which you will learn to reduce your environmental impact.

Energy efficiency

Energy efficiency refers to the ability to use less energy to perform a specific task, without sacrificing quality or performance of the process. The objective is reduce energy consumption by improving efficiency in the generation, distribution and use of the same. To be more efficient, companies can invest in improving their technology, optimizing processes, or adopting sustainable practices and policies.

Energy efficiency is important for environmental sustainability, as excessive use of fossil fuels contributes to greenhouse gas emissions and climate change. In addition, energy efficiency can also help reduce costs. operating costs and increase economic competitiveness.

Green IT

Green IT is a term used to describe how ICTs can reduce their environmental impact, thereby includes the design, production, use and disposal of technological devices and systems. Green IT focuses above all on reducing energy consumption, the emission of greenhouse gases, the use of toxic materials and increasing the efficiency in the use of resources.

Green IT practices include optimization of power systems, use of renewable energy sources, use of low-power devices, efficient data storage and management, virtualization, the use of sustainable communications technologies or the recycling and reuse of electronic devices. In addition Green IT also includes the consideration of environmental implications in business decision making and strategic planning.

Sustainable IT

One more step is taken by companies that are committed to Sustainable IT or sustainable IT. In this case, we are talking about an information technology management approach that seeks to ensure that it is used in an ethical, responsible and sustainable for the environment, society and the economy. As in the case of Green IT, this includes the design, production, use and disposal of information technology devices and systems such as a distributed energy management system.

But also, the objective of Sustainable IT is maximize economic benefits of ICTs, while minimizing their negative impacts. This is achieved by implementing sustainable practices such as optimizing energy use, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, using sustainable materials and processes, reducing waste, and promoting ethics and social responsibility in ICT management.

e-waste

E-waste, also known as electronic waste, is the term used to describe waste that originates from electronic, technological equipment or household appliances.

E-waste can contain toxic metals, such as lead and mercury, as well as other components that are harmful to the environment and human health. E-waste also includes the waste generated by the production, use, treatment and disposal of these devices. Improper handling of electronic waste can have serious consequences for the environment and human health, so it is important implement appropriate policies and practices for its management.

Carbon Neutral

A carbon neutral technology refers to a technology or process that does not emit greenhouse gases or that offsets its emissions through carbon capture and storage. This means that, during its life cycle, that technology does not contribute to climate change by releasing greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.

There are several ways in which a technology can be considered carbon neutral. One of them is using renewable energy sources for its operation, such as solar or wind energy. Some companies, however, can boast of declaring themselves carbon neutral despite emitting greenhouse gases, if they offset these emissions, buying emission rights in the financial markets or through other actions such as planting trees (for example after a fire) that contribute to absorb carbon released into the atmosphere. Currently, many technology companies are either declaring themselves carbon neutral or announcing that they will be as soon as 2025, thus fulfilling the climate agreement that many countries and institutions signed at COP21 in Paris.
