The ability to use WiFi to send text messages is coming soon to Free. Carriers have offered this feature for years, and it’s finally time for the telecom troublemaker to catch up. On the other hand, the firm of Xavier Niel has not yet communicated a precise date for the deployment.
After setting up its VoWiFi and VoLTE devices, Free is now interested in supporting IMS for sending SMS. As a reminder, IMS is the standardized architecture for operators allowing the use of the technologies mentioned earlier, as well as voice over IP. In other words, the operator wishes to allow its subscribers to send their SMS through a WiFi network.
“Our network does not yet support SMS in IMS”explains Xavier Niel, but ” it’s planned “, she assures. For those who are not at Free, this statement has something to smile about. Indeed, Orange, Bouygues Telecom and SFR have all been offering text messages via WiFi since 2019. As with VoWifi and VoLTE, the troublemaker of telecoms therefore lags significantly behind its competitors.

Free subscribers will soon be able to send their SMS via WiFi
Especially since Free does not yet venture to give a deployment date for the feature. Recall that it took pseveral months between the announcement and the commissioning of VoWiFi at the operator. So there is a good chance that subscribers still have to be patient before they can take advantage of the IMS for their SMS. We will of course keep you informed of the progress of the project.
Once deployed, however, the device will prove particularly useful in areas where the network often leaves something to be desired. Like VoWiFi, it will allow you to rely on your own network or on a public connection to send messages from your smartphone. Suffice to say that many users are waiting for it.
