Fujitsu and Oxford Quantum will bring quantum computing to Galicia

After the Basque Country, it is Galicia’s turn. in the frame of the past Fujitsu Activate Nowheld this week in Madrid, the Japanese multinational and CESGA (Galicia Supercomputing Center) have announced an agreement to establish a quantum center that will be based in Santiago de Compostela.

With the collaboration of the British startup Oxford Quantum Circuits, the new quantum center will begin its activities in September of this year. As explained by officials from both Fujitsu and CESGA, both organizations will collaborate closely with Galician universities and the community of researchers from the Higher Council for Scientific Research to promote the development and research of quantum technologies, create new knowledge in this fieldattract talent and investment to Galicia and promote the use of quantum technologies to address the social challenges facing the world.

CESGA was created in 1991 to contribute to the development of science and technology using high-performance computers and communication technologies for the benefit of society. As a technological partner of CESGA, Fujitsu will contribute its experience in the field of quantum computing, acquired through its continuous development of quantum technologies, including hardware and software.

As the first step of the new association, CESGA will build a cluster system based on the 34-qubit quantum computer simulator in the “Fujitsu Supercomputer PRIMEHPC FX700”, equipped with the same A64FX CPU as the “Fugaku” supercomputer and series “Fujitsu Server PRIMERGY”, as well as an additional cluster system consisting of a 32-qubit quantum computer developed by Oxford Quantum Circuits. The CESGA will also adopt the Digital Annealer from Fujitsu, inspired by quantum technology, and is scheduled to go live in mid-September 2023.

Luis Orosa, managing director of CESGA has stated that “this collaboration with Fujitsu will be key for Galicia to promote its already relevant production of new developments and research, both in quantum hardware and software in the coming years, helping us to establish our research groups in a world-class leadership position and enabling them to shape the future of quantum computing.”

This initiative is part of the Pole of Quantum Technologies of Galiciawhich aspires to invest 154 million euros in the coming years and in which investments for more than €30 million and has been selected by the Xunta de Galicia as one of its strategic projects to attract Next Generation funds.
