Samsung lifted the veil last week on its new high-end SoC, the Exynos 2022. The chip is engraved in 4 nm, and has the distinction of being the first designed jointly with AMD for the graphics part. Indeed, the chip offers a custom Xclipse 920 GPU, based on AMD’s RDNA 2 architecture which is already used in the PS5 and Xbox Series X home consoles.

We will find the processor for the first time on board the new Galaxy S22 which are presented on February 9, but first benchmarks have already revealed what the GPU was capable of. Indeed, the GPU was spotted on the Geekbench 5 benchmark, and it looks more powerful than the Adreno 730 of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 1.

The Exynos 2200 more powerful than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, really?

As Geekbench reveals, the Exynos 2200 would have obtained scores of around 8500 points on Vulkan, and more than 9000 points on OpenCL. This is therefore significantly more than the Adreno 730 of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, which obtains results of around 7000 and 6000 points, respectively. These results suggest that the Exynos 2200 will be faster in game than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, but we will probably have to wait for the tests to be sure.

Indeed, we had already seen the Exynos 2200 perform less well than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 in other benchmarks, such as on GFXBench Aztec Ruins OpenGL 1080p. While the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 tops out at around 143 fps, the Exynos 2200 would only get 109 fps.

As a reminder, we know that Samsung throttled its Exynos 2200 chip just before launch due to overheating issues with AMD’s GPU, so it wouldn’t be surprising if it performed less well than the AMD Adreno 730 GPU. Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. During the official presentation of its chip, Samsung has strangely not announced any particular performance gains nor the exact frequencies of the various cores of its chip.
