Global PC revenue up 15% even as sales drop

Even with fewer PCs and notebooks being sold in early 2022 compared to the same period in 2021, global revenue grew by 15%. According to a survey disclosed this Monday (11) by Canalys, the amount achieved with sales reached US$ 70 billion (R$ 330 billion).

In terms of units delivered, the drop was 2.8% in the comparison between the first quarter of 2022 and that of 2021, with a total of 80.06 million units against 82.38 million last year.

Also according to the survey, what explains the increase in revenue even with the slight drop in sales is precisely the price: the values of PCs continued to rise, even with a market lacking supply.

Notebook sales also dropped 6% year-on-year to 63.2 million units, while desktop sales grew 13% — or 16.8 million units sold.

Future growth for the PC market

And the outlook is for even more growth in the coming months. “People are using their PCs more often, longer and for a wider variety of tasks than ever before. The last two years have greatly expanded the installed base, with more than 150 million notebooks and desktops added between 2019 and 2021,” noted Rushabh Doshi, Principal Analyst at Canalys.

For him, even if customers need to hold back and not buy so much in the short term due to the increase in device values, still “a big wave of device upgrades is inevitable, especially since more than 50% of active devices have more than four years”.

That is, programmed obsolescence must guarantee the inevitable increase in revenue.

In addition, the return of work activities to face-to-face or hybrid activities should also contribute to this increase. “Meanwhile, commercial demand will remain strong this year, even as consumer and education purchases decline. Resuming workplace activity to near pre-pandemic levels, along with hybrid and remote workers who need higher-spec PCs to maximize productivity, means business IT expenses will remain high in 2022.”
