Global warming: this deputy wants to repaint the roof of cars in white

The environmental MP Julien Bayou has just tabled a bill consisting of the installation of a reflective coating on our buildings to regulate the temperature inside. To put it simply, paint the roofs of our houses/buildings white to limit overheating and the use of air conditioning. An idea that he would like to apply to our cars as well.

During the various heatwaves that occurred this summer, you may have heard in some reports of the albedo effect. Simply put, this phenomenon describes the ability of a surface to reflect solar energy. The lighter a surface, the higher the albedo. This technique, widely used in Greece in particular or in the Maghreb countries, allows a large part of the sun’s rays to be returned to the atmosphere and considerably reduce the temperature inside a building or a house.

This process, which is also called “cool roofing”, has attracted the attention of the Deputy EELV Julien Bayouwhich comes from table an amendment the bill relating to the acceleration of the production of renewable energies. With this measure, Julien Bayou simply wishes impose the use of this technique on non-residential buildings (companies, shopping centers, schools, etc.).

Cool roofing on the roofs of houses… and cars!

White paint – whose solar reflective index (SRI) is equal to or greater than 100 – will allow a large part of the sun’s rays to be returned to the atmosphere. The roof remains at room temperature, which limits overheating during the summer period and a fortiori during heat waves (up to 7 degrees difference)”, explains the deputy.

According to him, the “cool roofing” imposes itself above all as a simple and effective solution to avoid/reduce the use of air conditioningharmful to the environment (due to refrigerants) and particularly energy-intensive.

While this amendment will be examined next week in the National Assembly, Julien Bayou would obviously be interested in making this process mandatory on our cars! In any case, this is what our colleagues from the Parisian. The idea remains similar: painting the roofs of our vehicles white would reduce the ambient temperature in the passenger compartment, especially in summer. In fact, this would limit the use of air conditioning, which as you know has a strong impact on the consumption of our cars. And you, what do you think of this measure? Tell us in the comments.
