Google begins testing searches with generative AI

Barely two weeks have passed since Google I/O 2023 was held, the company’s annual meeting aimed at developers, but which for some time now has also become an excellent showcase for those from the search engine to carry out some of the most important announcements of the year, something that usually tends to focus on devices and Android, but that On this occasion, artificial intelligence was the main protagonist.

It has been known for a long time that Google reserved a large number of novelties in this regard for its May eventAlthough Microsoft’s advances in the field of AI, which have played such a leading role since the beginning of the year, forced Google to advance some announcements, such as Bard’s, which occurred just 24 hours apart from Microsoft’s. Bing and Edge Copilot. Since then, and until two weeks ago, it has seemed that they always acted in response to those from Redmond, but with the announcements of I/O 2023 they left us with the taste in our mouths that it seems that the slipstreaming is over.

It is true that Bard has not yet reached the European Union, but this is not due to technical reasons, but rather the uncertain legal status of AI in the common European space. However, in this regard, it has recently become known that Google is collaborating very actively with the EU to establish the expected legal framework for the old continent. In other words, it seems that we should not ask if Bard will arrive in Europe or not, but when he will.

But Bard is only part of Google’s novelties based on artificial intelligence, and another of the particularly relevant announcements, probably the most important of the entire event, was that of the integration of generative artificial intelligence in Google Search. With this model, which aims to substantially change the experience of searching for information on the Internet, Google will stop displaying the traditional list of results, instead displaying a summary of the response to our query, and then a selection of links. in case we want more information. This new format is called SGE (Search Generative Experience, generative search experience).

Now, as we can read in The Keyword, the company’s official blog, Google has started offering access to Google Search with SGE through Search Labs. It is important, at this point, to remember that SGE is not Bard, although both services share technology, that is, that access to Bard does not translate into access to this new experiment, that it has its own waiting list and that, At the moment, it is also quite restricted in terms of its scope.

Although Google has been on its toes when it comes to deploying Bard, we can imagine that will act even more carefully with regard to the display of SGE in your browser, because unlike what happens with the launch of a new service, well that is Bard, introducing such a relevant change in one of the most important products of the company, in addition to its dean, can be particularly complicated. Reach? Almost certainly, but it will still take a while for it to become the standard search tool for Google Search.
