Google Chrome: these new menus will help you save energy

Chrome is the most popular of browsers, but it’s a real drain on memory and power. Google wants to give us the tools to better control its resource consumption with a new menu accessible from the address bar.

Chrome is by far the most popular browser with over 65% market share. It is true that the Google browser has many advantages: it is fast, its interface is simple and immediately understandable, and it offers very useful features on a daily basis. The Mountain View company tells us, for example, the end of passwords. However, it is far from being the most efficient browser in terms of the use of resources. He is known to use a lot of RAM, so battery. At a time when energy sobriety is required, it is urgent for Google to correct the situation.

For now, Chrome is limiting its resource usage putting all inactive tabs to “standby”. Simply click on a tab to reload the page and review its content. If the process is effective, we do not know how much memory it saves. It is to give us greater visibility that Google will soon offer us a new Performance section in the settings of its browser. It will be accessible by typing chrome://settings/performance in the address bar.

Chrome allows you to better control its use of RAM

In this page you will be able to see how much RAM is saved and allocated to other tasks by each tab. This resource consumption monitoring feature is not new, Microsoft already offers it in Edge. This new feature will eventually make it possible to close unnecessary but energy-intensive tabs.

We will also see theappearance of a Battery Saver icon next to the address bar. You can activate this mode when you use your laptop on the battery and the latter reaches a predefined level. Chrome will limit background tasks and visual effects by lowering the number of frames displayed per second, for example. Other options are in preparation: exception list or the definition of the inactivity threshold for each tab. If Google focuses on the performance of its browser, the latter is also known to have many security flaws. The company still has work to do before offering the perfect browser.
