Google improves its browser for our Mac

Google Chrome

Although Apple has its own browser created in the image and likeness of each of the devices in which it is included as a base, we know that there are other options on the market. One of them is that of Google and Chrome is one of the most used browsers, especially considering its extensions that are always useful regardless of the operating system in which they are used. However, if we talk about macOS, we should know that Chrome is a browser that uses more resources than Safari, but Google wants to fix that with enhancements just added.

Google is currently testing the Chrome 108 version that includes some very interesting new features. He wants to add and is testing two new modes. Memory Saver modes and Energy Saver to improve browser performance and extend battery life, respectively.

If we go to the configuration section, we find a new menu called “Performance” in the sidebar. There we can find the way Memory Saver that what he will do will be “free up memory of inactive tabs”. This is used to make active websites have as smooth an experience as possible and in turn other running applications take more computing resources.

If we look closely, when this function is active in the address bar, on the right, Chrome includes a speed dial icon. At all times we will know how many KB of memory have been freed for other tabs. In this way, it is possible to reach use 30% less memory resources when the browser is running. At least, that’s what Google says. Google recommends using Memory Saver to “keep active video and game tabs running smoothly.”

The other mode, Energy Saver, is intended to Reduce power consumption and extend battery life. The Chrome browser does this by limiting background activity and the rate of image capture. Visual effects such as animations, smooth scrolling, and video frame rates are also reduced. We will know that the mode is activated when we see a leaf icon on the right. It can be activated manually or automated when there is less than 20% battery left on the Mac or constantly when it is not plugged into the network.

The update is gradually coming to the Mac and other operating systems. Patience in case it hasn’t arrived.
