Google, not as fast in AI as we expected

The last few days have been, when it comes to artificial intelligence, hectic and exciting. The technological ones, Google among them, have been launched to make announcements on the integration of generative models of artificial intelligence in their products and services, drawing a near present in which this technology will be a game changeras the Anglo-Saxons say, that is, something that will change the rules of the game as we have known them up to now.

It all started, just two months ago, with the open beta of ChatGPT. Since then, it has been a rare week that we have not had news related first to this OpenAI chatbot and, since shortly after, to other technological developments that point in the same direction. In some cases, such as Microsoft, asserting its participation in OpenAI and in others, such as Google, using its own developments in artificial intelligence.

After weeks of rumors about the integration of a variant of ChatGPT based on GPT 4.0 in Microsoft Bing, Microsoft and OpenAI announced yesterday their plans in this regard, in which in addition to Bing we also meet Microsoft Edge, during a press presentation that Redmond stated that it had been scheduled for a long time, but that coincidentally it occurred a day before the Google Live From Paris event, announced last week and that took place this afternoon.

As you may also remember, Google announced Bard, its own chatbot, last Monday, which was also intended to be a reaction to the speed that it seemed (as confirmed yesterday) to be charging. Microsoft’s plan to put Bing at the forefront of innovation in relation to Internet search engines. Thus, we all expected that the event held this afternoon in Paris would clarify all the doubts we have regarding Bard and that, in addition, it would reveal the dates in which we will be able to start using it.

However, and although the meeting was dedicated to artificial intelligence, Google has not given more information about Bard than the one already revealed the day before yesterday in the official blog of the company by its CEO, Sundar Pichai. Today was a golden opportunity for Google, which could respond to what was presented yesterday by Microsoft and OpenAI, especially the integration of Prometheus in Edge. But at least for now It seems that Google does not want to run so much.

Instead there have been some interesting announcements, but I personally think they are not up to par from what we saw yesterday in Redmond. News in Google Lens for Android, which will now allow you to search what is displayed on the screen, the possibility of combining images and texts in searches to obtain more refined results, the arrival of Live View and enlargement of the same to interiors and improvements in the translator, which will allow choosing the appropriate meaning of polysemic words based on the context, in addition to adapting to local idioms.

They are interesting announcements, this is without a doubt, functions that will improve the user experience of the tools, but it would be cynical to deny that we expected more, especially after the blow on the table given yesterday by Microsoft. At this point I must say that I understand the conservative profile adopted by Google, compared to a Microsoft that plays much less in this field. However, and more in a world as dynamic as the technological one, does not seem like a winning trick.
