Google Pixel: you can now repair your smartphone yourself with original parts

Like Samsung, Microsoft or even Valve, Google has also decided to use the services of iFixit, the repair pros, to facilitate the purchase of spare parts for the Google Pixel. The two entities are strengthening their partnership by now offering original parts.

As you know, more and more manufacturers are seeking to reduce the ecological footprint of their activities. This involves removing the charger from the box of smartphones, a practice inaugurated by Apple with the iPhone 12 and then taken up by its competitors like Samsung. We must also not forget the sale of spare parts to enable users to repair their products themselves.

To facilitate this process, several brands have chosen to partner with iFixit, the reference site for repairs and sales of spare parts. This is the case of Valve for the components of the Steam Deck, of Samsung for the Galaxy S20 and S21, or even of Microsoft (tutorials are available for repairing Surface Pro or Xbox consoles).

In other words, we have come a long way, iFixit and Greenpeace declaring in 2017 that Apple, Samsung and Microsoft were the worst companies in terms of planned obsolescence. In April 2022, Google ended up joining forces with iFixit in order to offer Google Pixel spare parts for sale.

However, this partnership took on another dimension this Wednesday, June 29, 2022. For now, the most important original parts, either screens, batteries, charging ports, stickers and rear photo sensors will be available only in Europe (including France), the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and Australia. However, iFixit has confirmed that parts for the next upcoming Pixels, including the Pixel 7, will be accessible as soon as these smartphones are available.

In addition, and starting in the fall of 2022, iFixit will add “a comprehensive collection of parts and repair tutorials” for the Pixel 6a. As for the models already supported (from Pixel 2 to Pixel 6 Pro), other parts will be added in the weeks and months to come.
