This week, Google Drive It has been involved in a controversy when some users realized that, without prior notice, the cloud had begun to apply some restrictions and limitations of use. Google argued that this decision was made for reasons of performance and security of the entire infrastructure, and that the limit was here to stay. Luckily, the company has reconsidered, and just three days after its implementation, today it has finally removed it.
From one day to the next, some Google Drive users, especially those with the most advanced Google One plans, began to see a notice that your account had exceeded the file limit, limit set at 5 million files. And the only way to continue uploading more files was to delete some of the existing ones.
The limit may seem very high and unattainable, and precisely those who find it (users who use it for professional purposes, in its modalities of several TB of space) are precisely those who should have the least problems. In addition, these restrictions were not indicated anywhere, something that has greatly annoyed users.
The argument used by Google for the implementation of this limit is that it was a security measure designed to prevent misuse of its platform in a way that could affect both the stability and security of the system.
Finally, after all the controversy, Google has decided to go back and undo this policy.
We have “unlimited” storage again
A few hours ago, the official Google Drive Twitter account posted a tweet informing all users that although the number of affected users has been very small, they have decided to go back, undo the change and look for a better alternative to ensure the best experience for everyone.

We recently rolled out a system update to Drive item limits to preserve stability and optimize performance. While this impacted only a small number of people, we are rolling back this change as we explore alternate approaches to ensure a great experience for all.

Users affected by these issues will be able to log back into their Drive account without issue, access all data, and even keep uploading more files.
In addition, Google has apologized for implementing changes without prior notice, and has promised that, from now on, whenever it is going to make a change, it will notify users in advance to avoid new problems like this.
What is the new Google Drive limit?
Google has not given details about the new limit that it has configured for its cloud, although everything indicates that there will simply be increased maximum number of files up to 10 million, or more, so that the few users who were already close to the past limit do not have problems. But it is likely that this will not stop here.
Google has said, verbatim, that they will “explore alternative approaches” to ensure the best experience for everyone, including themselves. And, therefore, this is not going to be like this. We bet on a new subscription model with a file limit, or an additional payment in case we want to upload more than a certain number of files. It is clear that Google is going to take advantage of this situation so that “everyone” wins, but especially them.
