Graphics shipments fell sharply in the third quarter of 2022

According to the latest report from Jon Peddie Research (JPR), processor and graphics shipments have declined during the third quarter of 2022. This is shocking if we take into account that it is a time when sales tend to accelerate, but once again, the turbulent context in which we live, with various intersecting crises, have caused shipments of processors and graphics to fall, thus following the PC trend in recent months.

JPR says that, according to their calculations, the total graphics shipments were 75.5 million units in the third quarter of 2022 and a year-on-year growth of 2.8% was expected. However, what has occurred in the end is a contraction of 25.1% compared to the numbers for the same period last year. Although it sounds surprising, most of the contraction was absorbed by the laptop market with a 30% decrease, while the desktop registered a drop of 15.43%. JPR points out that it is the biggest drop recorded since the 2009 recession, in which the economic crisis of that time was combined with the rise of smartphones and tablets compared to PCs.

When it comes to the two big manufacturers of graphics processing, NVIDIA and AMD Radeon (Intel remains to be seen how far it goes), their shipments were reduced in the third quarter of 2022 by 47.6 and 19.7 percent. cent respectively. Intel, for its part, has seen its records improve with an increase of 4.7%.

Graphic shipments during the third quarter of 2022

NVIDIA and AMD Radeon registered falls in their market shares of 8.5 and 1.87 percent respectively, while Intel managed to improve by 10.3%. Taking the set of graphics processors in general, Intel continues to dominate with a 72% share thanks to the integrated ones of its processors, which for generations have been very good for all basic tasks and even many professionals that do not require graphics power ( for example web development). NVIDIA and AMD rank second and third respectively with shares of 16 and 12 percent in the same order.

Similar is the situation of processors, whose shipments fell 19% in the third quarter of 2022 compared to the same period of the previous year and 5.7% compared to the second quarter of 2022. In total, 66 million units were sold to add four million less than in the second quarter of 2022 and 15 million less than in the third quarter of 2021.

Processor Shipments During Q3 2022

The situation is different depending on whether the focus is placed on desktop computers or laptops, since in the former shipments increased by 10% and in the latter they decreased by the same proportion.

Jon Peddie, president of Jon Peddie Research, explains the results are the consequence of the “collapse of crypto mining, China’s zero COVID policy affecting manufacturing, and US sanctions.” On the other hand, he is not optimistic for the fourth quarter of 2022, in which he believes that shipments will drop again, although with better product availability.
