GTA 6: development, possible release date and everything we think we know about the new Rockstar

We know that GTA 6 it’s been a long time in developmentIn fact, Rockstar itself has confirmed on more than one occasion that with this new installment of its well-known franchise they have to “exceed expectations”. This is totally normal, because we are not only talking about one of the most anticipated games, but it is also one of the most important pillars for the sustainability of Rockstar as a company for the next few years.

The official information that we have about GTA 6 is quite scarce, but thanks to the leaks that have been produced in recent months we can offer you a quite interesting summary with data that allows us to get an idea of what we can expect from this gameand also everything related to its technical level, its release date and the platforms for which it will be available.

Let’s start at the beginning, how has Rockstar conceived the development of GTA 6? It is one of the most important questions, and also one of the ones that is generating the most doubts. There are two theories, one that says it is a current-gen exclusive development, which would mean it would only be available for Xbox Series XS, PS5, and PC, and another that places it as cross-generational development.

GTA 6

Taking into account the date in which we are, and the time that it would still take for GTA 6 to arrive, Does it make sense to believe that it could be a generational transition title? Seeing what happened with GTA V, a game that came to PS3 and Xbox 360 at the end of its life cycle, I am clear that yes, this new installment could perfectly be a game for the previous and for the current generation of consoles, in fact it would be the most profitable for Rockstar due to the huge number of users who still have a PS4 or Xbox One.

The recent GTA 6 content leak reinforced precisely that second theory, since that content used elements of GTA V. At the time it was said that everything contained in that leak corresponded to an early version of the gamethat is to say, that they are “old” contents, something that did not make much sense because we could perfectly see that they were running on GeForce RTX 30 graphics cardswhose release occurred between 2020 and 2021.

In any case, be clear that if in the end GTA 6 arrives as an intergenerational transition game its technical finish will be limited because Xbox One and PS4 will set the minimum base, and because the game will have to be prepared to work acceptably on both systems. A development limited to the current generation had set the minimum base on Xbox Series S, a more balanced and technically advanced console.

Rockstar could follow, in this case, the same strategy we saw with GTA Va game that received notable improvements in its version for PS4 and Xbox One, and that clearly differentiated it from the version for PS3 and Xbox 360. In the attached video we can see those differences thanks to the comparison that Digital Foundry made at the time.

Following this theory, the version of GTA 6 for Xbox Series S-Series X, PS5 and PC would not only render at a higher resolution, but would also have Improvements to texturing, lighting, shadows, reflections, render distance, geometry complexity, and NPC density. I also do not rule out the possibility that Rockstar decides to include ray tracing, as well as upscaling technologies to improve performance on both consoles and PC. However, the technical base will continue to be that of an intergenerational transition game.

Setting, gameplay and story mode: GTA 6 will maintain the essence of the saga

This is what emerges from all the content that we could see from that massive leak that was confirmed by Rockstar. In it, it was confirmed that the action revolved around a female protagonist, something that previous rumors already pointed out, that the conversations with the NPCs were going to be much deeper and more interactiveand that the setting of the title would focus in the present time, something that directly ruled out other rumors that GTA 6 could take us back to the Vice City of the eighties.

All the scenes and sequences that we saw pointed in that direction, and it was more than evident both by the scenes and by the cars that appeared in the videos. However, keep in mind that when I speak of the current era, I am not referring to 2023 specifically, but to the period between today and the last 23 years. On the other hand, the idea that GTA 6 will have several protagonistsand that as we have said, one of them will be a woman of Latin American race.

GTA 6

This leads us to think that the development of the story mode of GTA 6 could have many similarities with that of GTA V, and that we would tell the story of several different characters who, in the end, would end up meeting and sharing adventures and misadventures. Right now we know two names that could change in the final version of the game, Jason and Julia.

Regarding the gameplay, this installment will maintain the basic mechanics of the franchisewhich means that we will have enormous freedom to explain the city in which the action will take place, and that we will be able to interact on another level with the NPCs and steal different types of vehicles.

However, the continuity of GTA 6 will not be absolute, small changes will also occur. Everything seems to indicate that Rockstar will introduce new mechanics in stealth mode, such as the possibility for the character to crawl on the ground and to be able to move and hide NPCs, and we can almost certainly assume that the change system will be improved. of weapons and interactions with NPCs.

Numerous rumors have been claiming that the size of the GTA 6 map will be huge, and that this title will be the biggest and most ambitious of the entire franchise. There is no reason to doubt this, especially considering how long it has been in development and how important this game is to Rockstar. However, we must be clear that this is not confirmed, and that in the end Rockstar itself may decide to make a cut for a matter of time, or choose to save certain content to release it later as DLC, either free or payment.

GTA 6

Possible release date: will there be any delays?

Rockstar hasn’t given an official release date for GTA 6, but thanks to Microsoft we know its arrival is likely to happen. sometime in 2024. That date fits the end of life of Xbox One and PS4and would allow Rockstar to say goodbye to both consoles in a big way by launching GTA 6 as an intergenerational transition title, something that we have already mentioned before.

However, after the GTA 6 content leak that occurred last year, numerous rumors arose that Rockstar could choose to delay the release of said game. As the studio has never confirmed a release date we cannot speak of delay in official termsbut it is possible that, due to the criticism that the filtered content received due to its low graphic quality, Rockstar decides to spend more time developing GTA 6 to improve its technical invoice, something that in the end will force it to change its original launch plans and that would amount to a delay.

I am honest, and the truth is that after having seen most of the videos that leaked from GTA 6, I am clear that Rockstar has a lot of work ahead of iteven if what we saw is an early version of said game, since it does not meet the expectations it has generated and looks, in general, like a slightly improved version of GTA V. With this in mind, I prefer that said studio take their time and delay the release of GTA 6 if it will improve what we saw in those videos.

GTA 6

What PC will I need to play GTA 6?

It is one of the most important questions and one that worries fans of the franchise the most, and since we still do not have official information, it is impossible to give a totally reliable answer. However, yes I can share with you a series of estimates Starting from these two theories that we have already discussed previously, that is, whether GTA 6 will be an intergenerational transition game or an exclusive title for the new generation.

Possible minimum requirements if it is an intergenerational game

  • Windows 10 as the operating system.
  • Intel Core i5-4460 or AMD Ryzen 3 1200 processor (four cores and four threads).
  • 8 GB of RAM.
  • GeForce GTX 950 or Radeon RX 460 graphics card with 2 GB of graphics memory.
  • 130 GB of free space (SSD recommended).

This should be enough to move it with very low quality maintaining an acceptable fluency.

Possible recommended requirements if it is an intergenerational game

  • Windows 10 as the operating system.
  • Intel Core i7-8700 or AMD Ryzen 5 3600 processor (six cores and twelve threads).
  • 16 GB of RAM.
  • GeForce GTX 1660 Super or Radeon RX Vega 56 graphics card.
  • 130 GB of free space on SSD.

With these settings the game should work perfectly on 1080p with maximum quality while maintaining a stable 60 FPS.

GTA 6

Possible minimum requirements if it is an exclusive game for PS5, Xbox Series SX and PC

  • Windows 10 as the operating system.
  • Intel Core i7-6700 or Ryzen 5 2500X processor (four cores and eight threads).
  • 12 GB of RAM.
  • Graphics card GeForce GTX 1060 6 GB or Radeon RX 580 with 8 GB of graphics memory.
  • 130 GB of free space (SSD recommended).

With that setup the game should move relatively smoothly on 1080p with low quality, or maybe with low-medium quality. It all depends on what Rockstar optimizes.

Possible recommended requirements if it is an exclusive game for PS5, Xbox Series SX and PC

  • Windows 10 as the operating system.
  • Intel Core i5-11600K or Ryzen 5 5600X processor (six cores and twelve threads).
  • 16 GB of RAM.
  • GeForce RTX 2070 or Radeon RX 6600 graphics card with 8 GB of graphics memory.
  • 130 GB of free space on SSD.

This setup would be enough to move it on 1440p with high quality and a good level of fluency, at least in theory.

If Rockstar releases GTA 6 with ray tracing, and with upscaling technologies like NVIDIA DLSS, AMD FSR and Intel XeSS, the list of requirements will be much more varied and rich, and also much more complex, so keep that in mind.

However, if you have a PC that has at least a 6-core, 12-thread processor at the level and an IPC at the level of Zen 2 or Skylake, 16 GB of RAM and a GeForce GTX 1660 Super graphics card or a Radeon RX Vega 56 you can rest easy, I’m sure that with that configuration you will be able to move GTA 6 in a fairly dignified way.
