GTA V: A fan has 3D printed the game map

Armed with goodwill, time and patience, a fan of GTA V rebuilt the entire game map and then 3D printed it. More than 400 hours dedicated to this project have allowed him to have a scale reproduction of San Andreas.

Dom Riccobene, the author of this work, then posted the entire creation process on his social profiles, from the scan of the game to the printing of the individual pieces.

The GTA V map becomes real thanks to 3D printing

All fans of Grand Theft Auto, after 8 years of scouring the open world provided by Rockstar Games from top to bottom, they will know by heart every place on the map of San Andreas.

Now a product designer, a video game fan, has decided to try his hand at reproducing the game map and then printing it in 3D, strictly to scale.

The idea started after the pandemic arrived, with Dom Riccobene locked in the house by the lockdown and unable to continue his work that he decided to focus on virtual worlds and sought inspiration in games such as Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption.

The first phase of the process was to collect the data of the game map through a script created by him, which through a hotkey allowed him to detect the various elevations from the ground in a radius between 500 and 1000 meters around the player. . It took them more than 100 hours to collect this data, which is essential to create an accurate 3D model.

After having digitally reconstructed the map, he then divided it into blocks and then printed it, with some pieces that required only an hour of work while others even 12 hours, for a total of about 125 hours of printing.

Each tile is an 800mb 3D model. From there it was a matter of trial and error to reproduce buildings, terrains and water features in black. With the added challenge that each piece had to fit perfectly with the adjacent ones.

The entire project, shown in his viral videos, required more than 400 hours of work spread over a year. Although it was challenging as a project, Rich well he was satisfied with both the result and the feedback obtained from the fans, so much so that he began to develop the map of Red Dead Redemption 2.

Surely those of the aforementioned Rockstar Games are the most famous and played maps in the world, but at the same time there are many other games that can provide a game world that can be reproduced with 3D printing. Who knows if Riccobene has not started a new trend for all video game enthusiasts in possession of a 3D printer.
