Hackers hack Samsung and threaten to expose 190 GB of sensitive data

Samsung has been hacked. A group of South American hackers called Lapsus$ managed to seize the brand’s sensitive data. The gang claims to have stolen 190 GB of confidential data, including the code source of several technologies developed by Samsung.

Samsung has been the victim of a cyberattack, report our colleagues from Bleeping Computer. Slip$, a group of South American hackers, managed to seize sensitive data belonging to the company. Supporting evidence, the gang claims to have stolen 190 GB of data on servers.

A few days ago, the group Lapsus$ attacked Nvidia. The gang, which specializes in extortion, leaked several confidential firm documents online before to demand a ransom. Hackers are demanding that Nvidia remove all limitations that prevent mining cryptocurrencies with its graphics cards.

Sensitive Samsung data was stolen

According to hackers, data obtained from Samsung contains “confidential source code”. The hackers claim to be in possession of the codes which make it possible to encrypt data stored on a terminal or algorithms for biometric unlocking.

The hacked database also allegedly contains Qualcomm’s confidential source code, Samsung’s activation server source code and the “complete source code of the technology used to authorize and authenticate Samsung accounts”. This information can allow seasoned hackers to deploy computer attacks on the brand’s products.

To prove the authenticity of the documents, Lapsus$ published three compressed files on the web. In particular, we can see the source code of Knox, the secure platform integrated into Samsung-branded devices. This operating subsystem aims to protect users against attacks and malware. Obviously, the leak greatly compromises the effectiveness of this solution.

For the time being, the hackers have no not sent ransom note yet. Contacted by the Korea Herald, the Seoul giant claims to be taking stock of the situation. It is unclear whether Samsung plans to cooperate with hackers. We will tell you more about this major hack as soon as possible.
