Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone turns 25: discover the games based on the first book in the saga

The “Harry Potter” saga has marked generations. Despite the controversial opinions of its author, the Little Witch series is still an important landmark in pop culture. Behold, last Sunday (26), the 25th anniversary of the first book, “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” was celebrated.

Since then, a children’s book was responsible for several records, also resulting in many derivatives – and a collection of US$ 6.4 billion counting everything that the eight films made.

But speaking specifically of the first book, obviously, we had a movie – which, initially, would be an animation, but had the idea discarded at the beginning of production – but also several games – and that is one of the most curious things.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone Games

Apparently, when they decided to make a game based on the first book, little was known about the desired path. Because of this, no less than five different versions came out, for different platforms, and with their own characteristics, which made everything a “mess”.

The first to be released was the PC version which had players more or less follow the story of the book in a linear fashion. The highlight here is the casting of spells, which was done by moving the mouse.

In the version that reached the first PlayStation, players had a story similar to the PC, but with more collectibles – the Chocolate Frogs cards – and the possibility of unlocking improvements for the character in Quidditch. Also, spells were chosen automatically, which required little skill.

For the Game Boy things started to change. That’s because the game, unlike its other versions, was a turn-based RPG, in which players had to battle various creatures in scenarios that date back to the work.

In the case of the Game Boy Advance, there is the most challenging game. This is because all player actions during the game result in points being lost or gained, meaning that, in the end, Gryffindor could lose the House Cup.

The last one is the most controversial. After the release of “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets”, a new game based on the first book was released, this time for the PlayStation 2.

With improved visuals and several new mechanics – such as exploring the castle to find secret passages -, the game brought a lively and very interesting Hogwarts. However, it didn’t do very well in terms of sales, mainly because many people thought it was an old game.

All the movies had adaptations for the games, some good and some pretty bad. However, none went through the same issues as the first title, which won different versions made by different studios.

Anyway, Lego, as always, arrived and adapted all the books into two games. Both are quite popular and compile all the best in the saga, bringing a complete experience.
