Our colleagues from AutoPlus magazine have just published the ranking of the most stolen cars in France Last year. To develop this sad annual selection, the specialist magazine relied on data from nine insurers.

As the magazine notes, the number of vehicles stolen each year in France is stable since 2020. “Every year, there are 120,000 stolen vehicles, or 336 car thefts… every day!”regrets the report, which specifies that the pandemic, and the containment measures, have not changed the situation.

At the top of the list is the Toyota Prius. Produced since 1997, this hybrid car was not present in the top of the most stolen vehicles last year. According to the magazine, it seems that the car is coveted by criminals because of its catalytic converter, also called catalyst.

The pot of hybrid cars contains more precious metals (rhodium, platinum and palladium) than the exhaust of a thermal car. These metals are resold at a high price on the market. Rhodium, for example, is worth more than 600 euros per gram, ie eleven times more than gold.

In some cases, thieves simply turn the car over to take the catalyst. According to the national gendarmerie, abuses of this ilk are clearly increasing from year to year. Note that thieves also take advantage of shortage of metals, and rising prices, to reap profits. This is why the Prius has become particularly popular with car thieves. Check out the ranking below:

  1. Toyota Prius
  2. DS 7 Crossback
  3. Renault Megane RS
  4. Renault Clio 4
  5. Renault Megane 4

In second place is the DS 7 Crossback, a luxury SUV (116 flights for 10,000 vehicles). Third place is occupied by the Renault Megane RS (156 thefts for 10,000 vehicles). These two models are not very widespread in France. Finally, the Clio and the Meganetwo popular cars in France, bring up the rear.

According to the magazine, luxury cars no longer attract thieves. “As for luxury cars, once at the top of our charts, they attract less and less gangsters. Their electronic protection is now difficult to circumvent”, points out AutoPlus. We are thinking in particular of the security measures put in place by Tesla on its electric cars.
