How do Spaniards save shipping costs?

Ecommerce in Spain continues to rise and is one of the few European countries that in the third quarter of 2021 marked year-over-year growth in digital commerce, specifically 2%, compared to other countries such as France (-2%), Germany (-10%) or England (-13%), according to the Salesforce Shopping Index. The Spanish have embraced this form of consumption and it is expected that during the last months of the year their Christmas purchases through the Internet will continue to grow.

In this context, Huboo, one of the fastest growing fulfillment providers in the United Kingdom, has carried out the first Report on Online Consumption Habits of Spaniards, which reflects that 89% of them add one more product to their shopping cart to save shipping costs and 32% expect the minimum purchase to obtain free shipping costs is €20.

The study also includes other conclusions in reference to the online consumption habits of Spaniards, especially in their international purchases, since one of the characteristics of the online market is that local and international businesses are equally accessible, and in the third quarter of the year online commerce experiences significant growth. Only in Spain, according to data from the CNMC, electronic commerce exceeded 57.7 billion euros last year and the last quarter of the year registered the highest increase (15.8%) compared to 2020, registering more than 334 million transactions.

Thus, 69% of Spaniards rarely returns products purchased online and 12% have never done so. In the same way, in their international purchases, the star product of Spaniards is clothing (54%), followed by electronic devices (37%), entertainment products (26%) and cosmetics (20%).

For their part, the products that Spaniards buy the least are alcohol, books and household items. In addition, what Spaniards value most in their international orders are delivery time (47%), product cost (46%) and delivery cost (43%), as well as the reputation of both the company and the product itself (28%). In addition, 46% of Spaniards would set a week as the maximum waiting time for an online purchase.

Favorite shopping places

This study also reflects the preferred shopping places of Spanish consumers. Thus, 58% usually buy products through marketplaces, while only 10% do so through the website of the foreign store.

One of the main factors influencing this choice is customer service, since 72% of Spaniards believe that it is very important that this service is provided in their native language. On the other hand, among the main concerns of Spaniards when buying in foreign online stores are the difficulty in returning products (44%), very long waiting times (41%) and high costs ( 37%), in addition to differences in clothing sizing (34%).
