How to make a disk partition on your Mac?

macOS is a feature-packed operating system, one of the lesser-known being the ability to partition a disk when you first start a Mac or within System Settings. Therefore, in this article we are going to see how we can make a disk partition on mac.

Create a partition from disk utility

Before you start running a disk partition, it’s a very good idea to do ato backup your files so that you do not lose important information that you have stored. To do this, we recommend making a backup in Time Machine as in iCloud Drive. Once you have made the backup, you have to perform the following steps:

  1. In the Disk Utility app on your Mac, select a volume in the sidebar and click the Partition button in the toolbar. When you select a volume that contains data, the pie chart displays a shaded area that represents the amount of data on the volume and an unshaded area that represents the amount of space available for another volume.
  2. Click on add partition and write a new name for this partition
  3. Next, you have to choose the format dropdown menu and choose a file system format.
  4. Then you can choose the size of the disk drive partition you have generated, in case you want to make it larger or smaller.
  5. Read the information in the “Partition Device” dialog box and click Partition.
  6. After the operation is finished, click OK.
  7. Finally, once you’ve finished partitioning, an icon for each volume appears in both the Disk Utility and Finder sidebars.

Delete a partition

Once we have seen how to make a hard drive partition from Macs, we are going to see how you can eliminate it, since, once it has fulfilled its objective, it is not necessary to have limited available hard drive space. It is important to note that if you delete the partition, it will will lose all datas that contains the partition itself, so you have to be very careful with the files that are there, as well as perform a backup so as not to lose them. Warning: Deleting a partition erases all data on it.

  1. In the Disk Utility app on your Mac, select a volume in the sidebar and click the Partition button in the toolbar.
  2. If Disk Utility isn’t open, click the Launchpad icon in the Dock, type “Disk Utility” in the search field, and then click the Disk Utility icon.
  3. In the APFS Shared Space dialog box, click Partition.
  4. On the pie chart, click the partition you want to delete and then the Delete button . It’s important to note that if the Delete button is grayed out, you won’t be able to delete the selected partition.
  5. Click Apply.
  6. Read the information in the “Partition Device” dialog box and click Partition.
  7. After the operation is finished, click OK.
