HPE buys Athonet, provider of 4G and 5G private networking technology

H.P.E. has announced the purchase of Athonetan Italian provider of 4G and 5G mobile private network creation technology with which the company increases its Edge-to-cloud offer. Athonet offers service to both companies and providers of telecommunications markets, and is headquartered in the Italian town of Vincenza.

It has more than 15 years of experience in providing 4G and 5G mobile solutions to customers around the world, and its latest agreement with Dell was made public just yesterday. This aims to make it easier for SMEs to deploy private and flexible 5G networks, through a Dell Private Wireless solution in which Athonet participates. If all goes according to plan, the transaction will close early in the third quarter of HPE’s fiscal year 2023.

Athonet is a company considered a pioneer in technology, and has more than 450 successful implementations in clients of all kinds. From mobile operators, hospitals and airports, to public services and government organizations.

With its purchase, an operation of which the details have not been disclosed, HPE will have a complete offer of private 5G and WiFi networks for companies and communication service providers, which it will offer as a service through HPE GreenLake. Thus, HPE GreenLake will offer private 5G Athonet solutions, combining the costs of WiFi and private 5G in a single monthly subscription without capital expenses.

Flexible consumption options, including HPE Network as a Service, allow you to deploy private 5G networks with low risk, low up-front investment, and scalable on demand. HPE will also be able to offer private networking capabilities directly to enterprises as part of the HPE Aruba connectivity offering.

In addition, the integration of Athonet’s technology will enable HPE customers to accelerate deployments of private 5G networks, and will provide telcos with new revenue streams. It will also give HPE the opportunity to align cost with revenue, using a consumption-based model with HPE GreenLake. In this way, the risk of entering new markets is reduced.

With Athonet’s technology and software, HPE will also have the ability to better manage operational complexity, as well as achieve greater cost efficiencies, through 5G orchestration and automation. With Athonet software, HPE’s offering for telecom service providers will support private 4G and 5G networks, as well as include carrier-level orchestration and automation capabilities required by telcos. These capabilities will help launch new B2B services in communications.

According to Tom Craig, Vice President and General Manager, HPE Telecommunications Technology Group«the Telecom customers are looking for easier ways to deploy private 5G networks to meet high customer expectations. At the same time, enterprise customers demand a personalized 5G experience with low latency, segregated resources, greater range, and security both in their on-premise and industrial environments that complement existing wireless networks.”

For his part, Gianluca Verin, CEO and Founder of Athonethas recalled that «Athonet was founded to provide customers with private 4G and 5G solutions that offer carrier-grade reliability and performance to accommodate their increasingly challenging connectivity needs. We are delighted to join HPE and combine our highly-skilled teams as we expand our joint offerings as service providers for the private 5G market, building on HPE’s strategy to be the leading provider of edge-to-cloud solutions.”
