Huawei has officially announced its new Mate Xs 2 high-end foldable phone. It retains the design of the original Xs from 2020, with an outward-folding screen. However, this new model is more powerful and finally compatible with styluses.
Huawei has just announced during a conference in Milan its new foldable smartphone, the Mate Xs 2. The device stands out from its main competitor, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold, thanks to its unique screen which can bend the outside. Indeed, rather than using a large internal screen and a narrower external screen, Huawei’s device relies on a single 7.8-inch 120Hz OLED display with a definition of 2480 x 2200 pixelsa resolution of 424 ppi and a 8:7 ratio. When folded, the screen adopts a more compact size of 6.5 inches with a ratio of 19:9. It is capable of displaying over a billion colors.
The Huawei Mate Xs 2 is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 chipwhich was found in the high-end smartphones of 2021. It is important to note thatthis is the 4G version of the processorsince due to US sanctions, Huawei can no longer use 5G technologies in its smartphones.
The Huawei Mate Xs 2 wants to dominate the competition in photos
Unlike Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 3, Huawei’s foldable smartphone inherits a rather convincing photo configuration, since we find on the back a 50 MP main sensora 13 MP ultra wide-angle sensor and a 8 MP telephoto lens offering a maximum 3x optical zoom. The smartphone is therefore capable of filming in 8K, which is not the case with its rival at Samsung. The selfie part is provided by a 10 MP sensor placed in a punch at the top right of the screen.
On the autonomy side, the smartphone is powered by a 4600mAh batteryand supports the fast charging at 66 W. This is much more than what the Huawei P50 Pocket and its 40 W offered. Unfortunately, fast charging is not included, but there is Wi-Fi 6 connectivity, Bluetooth 5.2 and an NFC chip.
The Huawei Mate Xs 2 is lighter than the Galaxy Z Fold 3
The Huawei Mate Xs 2 weighs only 255 grams, which is a significant improvement over the previous model, whose total weight was 300 grams. This means that we are dealing here with the lightest foldable smartphone in its category on the market. The screen is protected by a four-layer polymer coating and, in addition, it is also compatible with the M-Pen 2s stylus.
The device measures 156.5 x 75.5 x 11.1mm when folded, 156.5 x 139.3 x 5.4mm (excluding the photo block) when unfolded. Huawei also claims that its improved hinge mechanism provides better durability and won’t leave any visible creases, but you’ll have to wait until you have the device in your hands to verify all that.
Finally, it is worth remembering that the Huawei Mate Xs 2 does not benefit from Google Mobile Services in Europe. Like the Huawei P50 Pocket which was launched in France at the beginning of the year, it will therefore be necessary to give up on Google applications such as Maps, the Play Store or Gmail. While the device runs on Harmony OS 2.0 in China, Huawei has chosen to equip it withAndroid 12 and the EMUI overlay for this European version, probably not to confuse customers accustomed to the operating system of the American giant.
Price and availability
Unsurprisingly, the Huawei Mate Xs 2 is much more expensive than the manufacturer’s flip smartphone, which was marketed here from 1299 euros. For this new model, it will take 1999 euros for the version with 8 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage. We remind you that this is the price announced in Europe, so it could be slightly different in France. The smartphone will be available in three colors: purple, white and black.
The smartphone will be launched in France in June, but Huawei did not share an exact date for its availability with us during its conference.
