IBM and Microsoft lay off their staff in Russia

Technological companies continue to take steps towards their definitive exit from Russia. Many have already left the country, while others are about to sever virtually all ties with it. It is the case of IBM and Microsoftfinally have decided to lay off all their workers in the country.

The step that IBM has just announced will mean its definitive departure from the country, after it decided in March to suspend its operations in Russia after the invasion of Ukraine. The measure will affect several hundred workers, although the company has not specified how many they will be.

The decision has been communicated to the staff on CEO of the company, Arvind Krishnathrough a statement, in which he recalls, in addition to the fact that the workers are not to blame for the situation, that they chose «suspend operations so we can evaluate long-term options while we continue to pay and support our employees in Russia. As the fallout from the war continues to mount, and as uncertainty grows about its long-term ramifications, we have made the decision to proceed with an orderly exit from IBM’s business in Russia. We see this step as correct and necessary, and the natural next step to the suspension of our business.«.

As for the Microsoft layoffs in Russiawill suppose the departure of the company of about 400 people, according to Bloomberg. Of course, it will not mean the definitive abandonment of Microsoft from the country. At least for now, because those from Redmond are going to start withdrawing their services from Russia, which represents less than 1% of the company’s global income. Its directors made the decision in early March to suspend new sales of products and services, and now it is going ahead with the reduction of its presence and operations.

For now, Microsoft will continue to honor its contractual obligations to its Russian customers, no more. It is to be expected that when these contracts expire, as they no longer offer new sales, the company’s operations in Russia will gradually disappear. At the moment, with the layoffs that have been announced, their activities are already going to be reduced quite drastically.
