IBM confirms that the mainframe will outlive us all

They have been killing it for more than 20 years, but the mainframe is not only still present in hundreds of companies around the world, but, thanks to companies like IBM, it seems to be experiencing a second youth. And it is that although it would be risky to affirm that the mainframe has become fashionable again, the need to store more and more data and for longer, is leading companies to make new investments in this field.

Precisely IBM has just confirmed that it will launch a new model of its Z Series mainframes during the first half of this year, also highlighting how this type of equipment has improved revenues in the company’s infrastructure area.

In this sense, during the presentation of the company’s results for the last quarter, james kavanaugh The company’s chief financial officer has highlighted that the new launch will have a positive impact on IBM’s revenues, which reached 16.7 billion dollars in the last quarter and have added 57.35 billion dollars in the last year (2.2 billion more than the previous year).

Kavanaugh’s good omens come at a time when sales of its latest mainframe, the Z15, are down four points, but keep in mind that we’re talking about a machine that launched in 2019. Even with that, The company has noted that the Z15’s sales cycle has performed better than that of the previous model, producing more MIPS (millions of instructions per second) than any previous program in the company’s history.

In the case of the equipment that will hit the market in the coming months, publications such as The Next Platform point out that it will use the new Telum processor, equipped with 22.5 billion transistors in a 7-nanometer process and has been specially designed to respond to large workloads related to Artificial Intelligence.

One of the great arguments that IBM is using to attract new clients to the world of the mainframe is to position it as a component with great potential for hybrid cloud development.

In this sense, Arvind Krishna, CEO of IBM, has highlighted in the same presentation of results that IBM clients are “eager to take advantage of the hybrid cloud and AI to advance their businesses”, which seems a hopeful message for the push What is the company going to do when marketing the new equipment?
