IBM rents its System servers to SMEs

IBM follows in the footsteps of Dell and HPE, and launches into the market of consumption and rental of servers for companies. It also does so with a low-cost subscription for its System and based on Power 10 processors, tied to its OS Aix (Unix) for as little as $50 per month per user.

This new service from IBM consists of installing a low profile System and quad core server at the site in your Power S1014 server. A great advantage for companies that, in case of need, can extend the basic license in increments of five.

These “rental” contracts have a duration of three to five years, and includes remote or on-site equipment maintenance. It is not an ideal option for large corporations, but it is for smaller SMEs that wish to do so. It is, however, a somewhat different service from Dell Apex or HPE’s GreenLake, which is charged to the user based on use.

What does this service include?

The server itself ships with 64GB of memory, with up to 6.4TB of NVMe flash storage and Ethernet and Fiber Channel connectivity. And it comes with a quad-core processor, although only one of them will be active. And because?

According to statements by Dylan Boday, vice president of product management for hybrid cloud, systems and AI at IBM, over 75% of System customers use single core and less than 10% use two cores. Virtually no one all four.

In general, users tend to use these servers for a significant number of third-party applications and perform a host of different tasks with it. These can range from a company inventory to, for example, banking operations.

Subscription package includes all hardware, software and services, with the option of a one-year renewal when the subscription ends. In addition, regarding remote and on-site support, it can be available in as little as 30 minutes, according to Boday’s statements: “All this content is delivered in an annual payment. You register, receive your package and make your first payment.

It remains to be seen if this new service from IBM by renting its System and on-site servers is successful. HPE with GreenLake offers companies IT solutions that combine the control of a local infrastructure with the economic flexibility and scalability of the cloud model. A hybrid model that has been successful in its application in companies. While Dell Apex, unifies Dell’s cloud and as-a-service strategies. Your customers can deploy workloads, manage multi-cloud resources, monitor costs in real-time, and add capabilities as needed along the way.
