If I share Apple Music, does that person have to live with me?

Given the constant changes and restrictions on the use of shared accounts that have been carried out in streaming services, if we are Apple Music users, it may assail us. The same question: Do you have to live under the same roof, as required by Netflix or Spotify? Or do we have the freedom to fight whoever we want, and play the content even if we are not at home? In this post we analyze how the situation is.

What is family sharing?

The function with which we can share Apple Music accounts is called In Family. Thanks to it, we can create a group of up to six people, through their Apple IDs. Once we are part of it, we can select what type of content we can share with the members that are part of the group. These can be both app purchases and subscriptions to Apple services.

When we subscribe to a company service, we must take into account the type of plan we are going to choose. In the case of Apple Music, if we want to share an account, we will have to select the Family plan, which allows up to six reproductions at a time. If we are in a family group, but we have a Voice, Individual or Student subscription, we will not be able to share it.

Whether we subscribe through Apple Music, or if we choose an Apple One plan, we have to make sure that the modality we contract supports shared accounts. Now, once we are aware of this first limitation, what happens if the person with whom we share the subscription does not live with us?

The truth is that we will not have any problem. We will not be asked for connection verifications under the same physical or IP address, nor will we be forced to verify identity (in strict terms) to verify that with whom we share an account, they live in our house. Shared subscription between accounts only requires an active Apple ID and a compatible plan.

How to share an Apple Music subscription

To carry out this process we need to create a family group. For this we will go to Settings > Apple ID (our name) > iCloud > Family Sharing. Next, the option to configure this group for the first time will appear. It is as simple as selecting the people we want to be part of, and an invitation will be sent to them by mail or SMS. When they accept, they will automatically appear in our family group.

As for the Apple Music subscription, if we want to share it we will have to go to Settings > Apple ID > Family Sharing > Subscriptions. Within this section we will see the plans that can be shared. As we have said before, if we have an Apple mMusic subscription that can be shared, it will give us the option for other members of the group to use it without us having to pay any additional cost. Similarly, if the subscription has been activated by another member of the group, we will not have to pay Apple an overcharge to be able to use the plan that they are sharing with us.
