If you have an OLED screen and you play on it you have to avoid this

OLED screens have become popular on PCs in the last year. Especially given the number of gaming laptops, monitors and televisions that are currently being sold and that are based on this technology. However, these show image problems when the games meet certain conditions and not only on computers, but also on consoles. What is that problem and how can it be avoided?

One of the most false myths that many repeat is the fact of applauding games at 30 FPS in the middle of 2022 and saying that they are more cinematic. The reality is that this comes from when conventional television content was reproduced at 30Hz on tube televisions in order to catch a full frame in progressive mode and not the half frame of interlaced. However, current panels are designed to have a refresh rate of at least 60 Hz and games running at lower resolutions cause image problems, especially on certain types of screens.

OLED screens and 30 FPS in games get along fatally

One of the things that make us take our hands to our heads are the so-called graphic modes in which great detail is offered in the games, but in exchange for these running at 30 frames per second, which is deadly on screens. of this type, since it causes a series of associated problems to appear. Among which we can highlight the following:

  • Stuttering and blurring issues when moving the camera in games are a visual pain. Playing the same game at 30 FPS on an OLED screen and then doing it at 60 FPS is night and day.
  • There are people, and we are not saying this to exaggerate, who suffer nausea problems after spending half an hour playing a game at 30 FPS on an OLED screen. So they can’t do long gaming sessions.
  • The general feeling is that games move less smoothly than on other screen types, this is due to the long frame to frame time combined with the short pixel value change time of OLED screens.

Is this a limitation of this type of screens?

Well no, because they are excellent, rather it is the stubbornness of the video game industry in wanting to still use 30 FPS because it allows them to place more flourishes per frame and make the games look more beautiful. . Honestly, playing games at said frame rate regardless of the console we are talking about or the graphics card we are using on our PC is really a horror on an OLED and believe us that the difference is noticeable and a lot.

How to solve it

However, there are small solutions. The first one is to use DLSS, XeSS, FSR or any technology that increases the average number of frames per second, although you can only do this on PC.

  • If it is necessary to lower the quality of any of the visual elements in the game from the options, do it, the important thing is to be able to reach 60 FPS without problems.
  • Regarding the television options, do not activate frame interpolation, it is designed to avoid these problems in movies and series, but in video games it is a bad idea.
  • By the way, we recommend you activate Black Frame Insertion or BFI to avoid the problem of OLED screens at 30 FPS, where everything seems to go less smooth. What it does is create an intermediate frame between one and the other at high speed, which causes a fade effect that gives a certain sensation of speed.
  • On console, if you find yourself getting very dizzy or nauseous switch to 60 FPS mode.

We hope these tips help you have more enjoyable games whether you play on PC or console.
