if you’re hesitant to buy one, don’t worry about the battery life

A company specializing in EVs has published a study that contradicts the myth that electric batteries are not durable.

On electric cars, we hear everything and its opposite. We often hear the most skeptical claim that they are “less polluting than combustion engines, but the manufacture of batteries is more polluting”, “they are impossible to repair from the first incident, which drives up the price of assurance “. A report by Recurrent Auto aims to reassure potential customers that electric car batteries don’t fail as quickly as some would like to say.

The Recurrent Auto study is based on a survey of 15,000 owners of electric vehicles. The company has taken a particular interest in battery health. They concluded that these last much longer than one might think. Only less than 1300 respondents, 1.5% of them had to change them outside the period covered by the guarantee. A high proportion of these unlucky people also owned a Nissan Leaf, whose technology did not allow for the same level of control of the temperature (and therefore of the health) of the battery.

The study surveyed no less than 15,000 owners of electric vehicles, its conclusion is clear

No less than thirteen models of electric cars were studied:

  • Tesla Model S
  • Tesla Model 3
  • Tesla Model Y
  • Chevy-Bolt
  • Chevy Bolt EUV
  • Chevy Volt
  • Hyundai Kona
  • BMW iX3
  • Audi e-tron
  • Nissan Leaf
  • Hyundai Kona
  • Hyundai IONIQ 5
  • Ford Mustang Mach-E

If, according to analysts, EV batteries reach their peak efficiency between 16,000 and 32,000 km, they remain, for the most part, able to operate up to 160,000 km. Not all thermal engine cars can boast of having such a long life. The company explains this endurance by the fact that cars now have very advanced tools for managing and controlling the battery and its temperature. It’s easier than ever to make sure their engine is in good health. Barring an accident, therefore, buying an electric car is therefore no more risky than a “classic” car.
