In Europe, roaming makes it possible to benefit from 5G

Since 2017, operators’ customers can benefit from free roaming anywhere in the European Union. An asset for travelers, which allows them to take full advantage of their packages. And 5G is starting to be available!

Operators have started turning on 5G roaming in European Union countries. Testimonials are starting to pour in on social networks and elsewhere which indicate that such a French customer of Orange can surf in 5G in Germany or Spain, without having touched his package and at no additional cost.

A European bond

This is the meaning of the EU roaming regulation, implemented in June 2017 and extended until 2032: when Europeans travel in the Union, calls, SMS and data are billed to them at the price that they pay in their country without surcharge. This applies to all connection technologies: 3G, 4G, and now 5G.

The European Commission is very clear on the subject: “ A roaming subscriber who can use 5G services in his country should also be able to use 5G services while roaming in a visited Member State if these services are available there. “. In other words, if the operator of the third country is in 5G, then the subscriber coming from another country of the EU must benefit from it, under the same conditions as the rest of the roaming.

5G is still in the full phase of deployment, whether in France or elsewhere in Europe, which explains why few travelers currently see the small 5G logo on top of their smartphone. But it is starting to happen, and it will multiply in the coming months.
