In less than a month, these two Windows are out of support, does it affect you?

Windows 10 and Windows 11 are the last two Microsoft operating systems, two modern, secure systems that are ready to last several more years (although Windows 10 already has a death date). However, there are still millions of users who have not made the leap to these systems and continue to use, for various reasons, old versions of Windows, such as 8.1 and even the already veteran Windows 7. Unfortunately, no Windows reigns forever, and sooner or later they end up passing away. And, like Windows XP and Vista, next month two systems will go down in history, leaving millions of users left to fend for themselves.

It’s no secret that Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 are in the home stretch of their lives. Microsoft already set the end of support date for both operating systems years ago. And even Windows 7 is experiencing an extended support period launched exclusively for those companies that had not been able to update. But everything comes to an end. And millions of users are not going to start 2023 on the right foot.

Desktop Windows 7 installed

January 10, 2023 is the second Tuesday in January, which means that Microsoft will release its security patches for all supported Windows, including Windows 7 and Windows 8.1. But, from that day, these two systems will become part of the list of deprecated, discontinued, unsupported systems. This means that Microsoft will no longer help users with problems. And, much worse, that no more security updates will be coming to these systemsnot even, even if a very serious vulnerability is discovered.

Windows 7 currently has a market share of 10%, and Windows 8.1 2%, which means that more than 12% of Windows users are going to stay left to their own devices. And, at any moment, they could end up in the clutches of hackers.

I still have Windows 7/8.1, what options do I have?

If we are one of the users who still use these versions of Windows, we have several options. The first of them, and the less recommendedis to stay in Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 without worrying about the problems we may have by no longer receiving updates.

The second of the options, and the most recommended, is upgrade to windows 10 or to Windows 11. Any user who moves Windows 7 will be able to move Windows 10 without any problems. Also, it is still possible to upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10 for free, so this is the best option.

Windows 10 Desktop

We remember that Windows 10 will only be supported until 2025. After that date we will be in the same problem as now. Therefore, our personal recommendation is to install Windows 11 to avoid problems.

Finally, the last option we have is jump to linux. This operating system has grown in popularity in recent years, especially since the release of Windows 11 and the unnecessary increase in requirements and the obligation to use a TPM chip. If we choose the right distro we can have a very easy to use operating system, with all kinds of free programs, and even with the possibility of using Windows programs on it. A great alternative to be able to give a second life to the computer and not have to go through the Microsoft hoop.
