Increased use of Artificial Intelligence and Big Data in Spanish companies

According to a report from National observatory of technology and society (ONTSI)the use of Artificial Intelligence and Big Data in Spanish companies is increasing. In fact, its integration into companies in Spain is increasing in companies of all sizes, and in a large number of sectors.

In companies with more than a dozen employees, its use has risen 3.6 points in recent months, which means that 11.8% of these companies are already using AI and Big Data. On the other hand, the companies in which its adoption has increased the most are the large ones. That is, those with more than 249 workers. In them, the use of Artificial Intelligence and Big Data has increased by 8% in 2022.

Micro-enterprises, that is, those with less than 10 employees, present the lowest percentage of adoption of AI and Big Data in Spain: 4.6%. Despite this low level of penetration in them of these technologies, it is 1% higher than what they had in 2021.

These data mean that Spain is in the European average in terms of adoption of Artificial Intelligence. Of course, it ranks 14th in this aspect. Among the sectors that use Artificial Intelligence the most are information and communications, with 41.9% of companies using it; and that of ICT, with 41.3% penetration.

Data analytics is used by 35.2% of companies in the IT sector, and 34.7% of information and communications companies. As for Big Data analysis, it is used 3% more than in 2021: in 13.9% of Spanish companies. In micro-enterprises they use it 0.5% more than in 2021. Thus, in 2022 3.7% of these companies use it.

2.3% have a staff specialist in Artificial Intelligence, 0.9% more than in 2021. But only 1.6% of small companies, those with less than 50 employees, have them. In medium-sized companies, with between 50 and 249 employees, the picture improves slightly, since there are AI specialists in 4.4% of them. Meanwhile, in large companies they are present at 10.5%.

The companies with more specialists in AI are those in the ICT sector, with 15.5% of Spanish companies that have this profile in their workforce. This is followed by information and telecommunications, which have this type of professional in 14.5% of the cases. The ones that have the most are large companies (41.7%). They are followed by medium-sized (20.1%) and small (7%). In the case of micro-enterprises, there are only AI specialists in 0.5% of them.

As regards data specialists, the companies with the most profiles of this type on their staff in Spain are also those dedicated to the ICT sector (41.9%), and those dedicated to information and communications (40 ,2%).
