Intel sells what’s left of its 4G and 5G modem division to MediaTek

Intel it is continuing with its strategy of getting rid of its divisions and business areas that have no place in its future strategy, known as IDM 2.0. The latest step he has taken in this direction is offloading what’s left of its 4G and 5G modem manufacturing division after selling most of the area to Apple in mid-2019. MediaTek will keep it.

This means, according to Tom’s Hardware, that Intel will stop manufacturing 4G and 5G modems, although it will continue to offer communications solutions for laptops with their CPUs, but equipped with modems manufactured by MediaTek, with technology that until now was from Intel.

After selling its mobile phone modem division to Apple, Intel still kept its patents on 4G and 5G. Of these, several came through the company’s purchase of wireless solutions from Infineon in 2011. In addition, it continued to offer 4G and 5G modem solutions as part of its laptop platforms.

Some time ago, Intel decided to partner with MediaTek and Fibocom to make them, and now the company plans to transfer its 5G technology to both. It is already transferring the driver code and license agreements to them to maintain the customer experience. Of course, although Intel intends to leave the 5G sector permanently by next July, it will continue to have a small support team at MediaTek, in order to help them with hardware, software and clients.

If all goes according to plan, the transfer of all technology will end in May. This transaction is not expected to have a financial impact on Intel, and Intel builders will be able to continue to collaborate with MediaTek to deliver updates to their existing products, based on their respective roadmaps.

According to Eric McLaughlin, Vice President and Head of Wireless Solutions at Intel«As we continue to prioritize investments in the IDM 2.0 strategy, we have made the difficult decision to exit our WWAN client business for LTE and 5G. We are working with our partners to facilitate a smooth transition to support their current divisions and ensure our customers continue to have solutions for the connected PC segment.«.
