Several American media outlets, including The Associated Press, obtained a memo from Christy Pambianchi, patron saint of Intel human resources. In this internal memo, the group asks its employees to be vaccinated against Covid-19 before the deadline of January 4, 2022.

Employees who refuse to comply will have to file a request for exemption for religious or medical reasons or undergo weekly tests. This measure concerns both people who work in Intel offices or who are teleworking. In the same vein, Netflix is forcing its technical teams to be vaccinated to participate in a filming.

Intel to impose 3 months of unpaid leave on all unvaccinated employees

Intel specifies that requests for exemptions will be considered until March 15, 2022. Employees whose exception is denied will be placed on unpaid leave from April 4, 2022. Employees will not receive any remuneration for a period of at least 3 months. This period is likely to be extended but the employees will not be fired, says Intel.

In addition, the company will continue to guarantee employees’ access to health care during their unpaid leave. Intel does not discuss what fate is reserved for employees who are still not vaccinated after the period of compulsory leave. “They will not be fired”, assures Christy Pambianchi.

Contacted by several media, Intel justified itself by citing a mandate filed by the federal government which aims to impose compulsory vaccination in companies. A decree from the Biden administration requires companies with more than 100 employees to require the vaccination of their employees or to perform tests every week.

“We will be evaluating options throughout the first quarter of 2022 and will continue to keep you updated”, tempers Intel in the memo. Many American giants, including Google, Facebook and Amazon, have already imposed vaccination on their employees in recent months.
