Intel wants to resurrect high-end Core-X processors

According to the latest rumors, new processors could arrive unexpectedly in the coming weeks. Rumors have it that Intel could resurrect its range of high-end desktop processors (HEDT). These intel processorsalso called Core-Xthey have not been manufactured by the company for a long time.

Some time ago Intel stopped manufacturing the Core-X due to its stagnation in the 14nm and its production problems. These processors are usually very expensive and far from the needs of the average user. But some registry changes in AIDA64 add beta support for the Alder Lake-X (ADL-X) processors.

Intel would be thinking of re-launching high-end processors (HEDT)

At the moment, the data regarding the Intel Alder Lake-X is quite relative and ambiguous. It is speculated that it could be a variant of the Sapphire Rapids for the consumer segment. They could bring server processors to the consumer market in a kind of hybrid.

It is possible that these processors are “pure” Alder Lake. These processors are based on a design that combines high efficiency and power cores. Using Intel’s own technologies, designs with more cores could be made and even “glue” processors. Although of course, they are speculations and there is nothing clear.

it seems that intel is preparing the launch of new hedt processors from the alder lake range

Alder Lake and Sapphire Rapids processors share Golden Cove cores, also called power cores. There are differences between them. The Golden Coves for Alder Lake have 1.25 MB of L2 cache, simplified ISA bus and other adjustments to obtain high operating frequencies. On the other hand, the Golden Coves for SapphireRapid have 2MB L2 cache, Special ISA bus for server/HPC and lower working frequencies.

It seems that Intel wants to compete with AMD again in a segment that they have forgotten. Currently, if someone wants an intermediate solution between consumer and server processors, they will only find the AMD Ryzen Threadripper.

Learning from mistakes

Skylake-X and Cascade Lake-X were Intel’s last HEDT processors before they were discontinued. These processors did not offer more performance than their commercial variants. They were very short compared to the extra cost they had and they were a fiasco in sales. Not having noticeable IPC improvement or higher performance makes them unattractive.

These new ADL-X processors could be a hybrid between server and commercial processors. The Golden Cove design will be used, this seems clear, but with cache adjustments, ISA bus and more cores, of course. It also seems logical that they offer four channels for RAM memory and more PCIe lines.

It is not ruled out that these processors, due to their characteristics, only support DDR5 RAM. The first problem will be finding it on the market and secondly, the price of these memories.

There are many unknowns about these processors, which, if a reality, would be more competition for AMD. It is possible, that if it is a reality, they will be presented this summer. We already know that normally the inclusion of support in software like AIDA64 means that the product is about to arrive.
