Intel will invest 20,000 million in building a chip manufacturing plant in the United States

Intel has made public its plans to erect a new semiconductor manufacturing plant in the United States, specifically in the state of Ohio. The Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger, told Time that he hopes this large plant will become “the largest chip manufacturing site on the planet«. The chosen place, a farm of about four square kilometers, is in New Albany, a town on the outskirts of Columbus.

Initially, the company plans to build two semiconductor manufacturing plants on the property, which will employ some 3,000 people. And if all goes according to plan, work to begin construction will begin this year, with the goal of having it up and running by 2025 and used to make chips for Intel and its customers.

Intel says that it has evaluated 38 different locations in the United States for this plant, but that it has chosen this one in Ohio because of the amount of space it could use without having to displace people who lived on the construction site. In addition, at that point you have the option to double the building space if you deem it necessary up to 8 square kilometers, and to build up to eight stories in the future.

At the same time, in Europe, the company, which has yet to announce the location of a new semiconductor factory, has already begun to install the equipment it needs to put into operation its factory in Leixlip, Ireland. The one known as Fab 34 it will go live in 2023 to make chips using Intel’s 7-nanometer technology, which is now known as Intel 5 technology. It will also be capable of producing chips using the Intel 4 node.

Intel began upgrading its Leixlip factory in 2019, and has had to virtually rebuild it from scratch to fit large ASML UV scanners. That is why it has taken almost four years to start developing and equipping the Fab 34. When it is ready it will allow Intel to develop advanced products in Ireland with Intel 5 technology next year, and in 2024 also with Intel 4 technology, which will give it the ability to manufacture even more advanced processors. The company hopes to be able to double its production in Ireland when Fab 34 comes online.
