Windows 11 has completed a year. And, as expected, Microsoft has released what is the first major update to its operating system, Windows 11 22H2, or version 2022 of this OS. This new version of Windows has come with a good number of new features and changes focused on improving the user experience. But it has also, unsurprisingly, with a host of bugs and issues affecting many users. Little by little, these errors have been solved with the patches that Microsoft has been releasing, but every few days new problems appear that drive users crazy.
This weekend, several users of reddit, and the Windows opinion center, have reported that, after installing the new version of Windows on the PC, the computer has begun to exhibit abnormal behavior, especially in relation to the graphics card.
These users claim that when they open the windows task managers, and go to the performance section, it appears as the GPU is working at 100%, as if it were rendering content or we were constantly playing. The curious thing is that, if we check its consumption, we can see that it is much lower than it would be if our graphics card was really working at 100% of its capacity. What’s going on?
A bug between Windows and NVIDIA drivers
This failure is not the first time that it can be seen. A few months ago it was already reported by users in one of the Insider builds that Microsoft released. The problem is due to an error in reading the 3D rendering engine of the graphics card, which makes the operating system think that it is constantly at 100% of its operation when, really, it is not.
Initially, this problem does not affect the performance of the operating system (at least, in theory), it will simply be impossible for us to know its real state and if any program is using the GPU or not. Fortunately, NVIDIA has already confirmed that it is working on a solution to address this problem and end it. And, in addition, it will arrive very soon.
The new NVIDIA drivers in beta phase have already updated the readings of the 3D rendering engine, and after installing them Windows works normally again. We do not recommend installing beta drivers as the cure may be worse than the disease. But, soon, an update of these drivers will arrive that will eradicate the root problem. The safest thing is that this will arrive in the first days of November.
Will Microsoft fix the problem in Windows 11?
Although it is NVIDIA who is going to mitigate it, the problem is still present in Windows 11. And, therefore, it is necessary for Microsoft to correct it to prevent it from continuing to occur. If a definitive solution to this problem is reached, it should be done on November 8, the date on which the new Patch Tuesday will take place. But, since it does not affect the performance of the PC, and it has already been mitigated by NVIDIA, it is possible that, like other times, Microsoft will forget about this problem, until there are problems again.
This problem only affects users with NVIDIA graphics cards. Those who have integrated graphics, or an AMD one, should have no problem with the measurements of the operating system.
