Japan and the Netherlands join the US in imposing chip restrictions on China

Japan and the Netherlands will join the United States on the Imposing chip-related restrictions on China, according to Bloomberg. The objective of these new sanctions is none other than to undermine the ambition of the Chinese government to develop its chip production capabilities in the country.

Due to these new restrictions, the Dutch company ASML Holding HV will not be able to send to China the uv lithography machines which are used in the manufacture of chips. As for the Japanese company Nikon Corporation., it seems that it will have similar restrictions in relation to the shipment of machinery to China.

These new restrictions expand Joe Biden’s policies of limiting China’s ability to manufacture and develop its own chips. The intentions of the country’s authorities are to use these semiconductors in Artificial Intelligence and machine learning, most likely for military purposes, but also for the technology sector. Above all, for its integration into smartphones and other mobile devices.

Equipment manufacturers in the United States had already complained that preventing only US companies from trading with China in terms of chipmaking equipment would affect their competitiveness, which has led to Dutch authorities and the Japanese reconsider the manner and type of exports that both ASML and companies like Tokyo Electron make of this type of machinery to China.

Regarding the decision taken by the governments of the Netherlands and Japan, the ASML CEO Peter Wennink, has warned that the control imposed by the United States on the export of lithography machinery will lead China to decide to develop its own advanced technology to be able to manufacture them. He is aware that it will take them a while to get it, but also that they will get it.

Apparently, leaders of the United States, the Netherlands and Japan are still negotiating about the limitations that they will impose on what can be exported to Chinese companies, and if everything goes as planned, by this Friday they will have the agreements ready in this regard. . Of course, there are no plans for a public statement of the restrictions that they will implement.
