John Wick 4 will ultimately not be released in 2022. Through a video, Lionsgate announces a postponement to March 24, 2023 in the United States.
The development of John wick 4 is not a long quiet river. While Keanu Reeves is currently starring in Matrix: Resurrections, the actor’s next big project is still behind schedule. Originally scheduled for May 2021, the film directed by Chad Stahelski has just seen its release date postponed again by a few months. It will ultimately not be released on our screens on May 25, 2022, but in 2023.
Lionsgate now plans to release it to the public on March 24, 2023, almost a year later. The studios have not yet shared the reasons for this turnaround, but the health situation and the various production delays linked to the crisis are undoubtedly not unrelated to it. As a reminder, filming ended last October and the teams are now working on the development of the 5th opus, still with Keanu Reeves.
The firm therefore undoubtedly wants to ensure the best possible exploitation in dark rooms. It must be said that in recent weeks, the situation has deteriorated almost everywhere on the globe, as in Belgium where cinemas will close their doors again on December 26, for an indefinite period.
A dive into the Continental
This postponement announcement took the form of a short teaser unveiled on YouTube. We thus find the operators who pass the file of John Wick, with the face of Keanu Reeves as a guest-star. Moreover, in the classification available on the board, the most observant will have noticed a subtle reference to the Matrix, with the presence of a certain A.Smith and T. Anderson on the board, undoubtedly an easter eggs for fans of the actor who officiates in the two franchises.
Other projects on fire
Fortunately for us, the John Wick license shouldn’t stop there. In addition to the 5th installment, Lionsgate plans to develop a spin-off series called The Continental. If it does not yet have a release date, we already know which actor will play the main character. It’s up to Colin Woodell (The forest’s call) that the role has been assigned. He will notably give the reply to the illustrious Mel Gibson, in the skin of Cormac. The Continetal should be released after the 4th film of the saga, so in 2023 at the earliest.
The series will return to the origins of the organization of the assassins, in the 70s. Chad Stahelski is also involved as creator and producer. It is therefore in good hands. Note also that Lionsgate is planning another spin-off, this time on the big screen. The film baptized Ballerina should follow the adventures of a young ballerina who is trained to become an assassin and obtain redress from those who killed her family. Ana de Armas will be showing.
