Josep Albors, from ESET: “SMEs invest very little in cybersecurity solutions”

security company, ESETlaunched a survey of Spanish companies to find out how they had impacted technological advances in your organization. Unsurprisingly, this is a very important factor for the growth of companies of all sizes. Despite the positive aspects, one of its main conclusions is that, for 71% of those surveyed, SMEs are more vulnerable to cyberattacks than larger companies.

Spanish employees and businessmen show a major concern due to the loss of data, the financial impacts and the decrease in customer confidence, especially in the business fabric of SMEs in the country. We no longer only talk about the economic damage, but also the reputational damage that a cyber attack can cause. To delve more into this topic, we have spoken exclusively with Josep Albors, director of research and awareness at ESET Spain.

MuyPymes: Why are SMEs more vulnerable than large companies to cyber risks?

Josep Albors: Mainly because they invest very little in cybersecurity solutions and personnel training. For this reason, criminals have a much easier time compromising them and, at the same time, it is more difficult for them to recover from these incidents.

It is important to stop seeing cybersecurity as an expense and consider it as an investment since the cost of a cyber attack can even lead to the bankruptcy of a company.

MuyPymes: What does the “reputational damage” of a business mean?

Josep Albors: This reputational damage refers to the damage to the corporate image that a company can suffer after a cyber attack. If we look at recent examples, these types of incidents can include a breach of customer and supplier data.

This would cause a loss of confidence among current and future customers, as well as potential investors.

MuyPymes: How are Spanish SMEs advancing in terms of security?

Josep Albors: Cybersecurity has gained prominence among Spanish companies in recent years, especially after the exceptional situation caused by the pandemic. However, there is still a great deal of ignorance both about the risks that Spanish SMEs face on a daily basis and about the solutions and security measures that can be implemented to mitigate them.

Among the points to be improved would be the implementation and maintenance of modern security solutions, the hiring of specialist professionals in this field, either internally or by subcontracting these experts, and the training of employees in cybersecurity so that they become another layer of defense instead of the weakest link that cybercriminals continually try to exploit.

MuyPymes: Is technology up to cyber attacks? How do these tools evolve?

Josep Albors: Security solutions evolve in the same way that cybercrime does. For this reason, it is important to have the necessary tools to be protected, know how they work and configure them according to our needs, so that they are as effective as possible. In the same way, it is essential to be aware of the tactics, techniques and procedures used by cybercriminals in order to learn how to recognize and block these attacks.

The cybersecurity industry has been evolving for decades and concepts that seem new to us today, such as artificial intelligence or machine learning, have long been integrated into most security solutions. However, we must never forget the importance of applying basic measures to protect a company’s systems, as well as a good incident response plan to be able to block and recover from possible cyberattacks.
