Kindle Scribe: writing comes to Kindle

It seems unbelievable, but It will soon be 15 years since November 19, 2007, date on which Amazon launched its first Kindle. Since then we have experienced the evolution of the device, as well as the growth of the family, the launch of its own ebook store, its subscription services… the story began with a single device, and now there are four, which are over. to add Kindle Scribe, the first that in addition to reading, allows us to write.

This new Kindle Scribe has a screen with Paperwhite technology, which we can already find in other Amazon devices, with a size of 10.2 inches and a resolution of 300 dots per inchwhich makes it perfectly suitable both for displaying all types of content (magazines, comics, etc.) and, of course, the user’s writing, which will also be displayed more clearly thanks to the illumination of the screen, with warm light and front light.

For writing, the Kindle Scribe can be purchased with a basic pencil (16 gigabyte model only) or a premium model. Neither of them needs to be loaded and they both allow typing, of course, but the premium version also includes an “eraser” on the back, as well as a user-customizable quick action button. In the case of models with capacities of 32 and 64 gigabytes, at least for now, only the option with the premium pen is offered. In the case of the 16-gigabyte model, the price difference between one and the other is 30 euros.

As for what we can do, that is, where we can write, Amazon says that with Kindle Scribe we can make notes in bookssave personal notes, create notebooks, journals and lists (with available templates), review documents and take notes on them, export our notes and send them by email… Come on, with these new features, Kindle Scribe is halfway between an eReader and a tablet.

There are aspects, however, that make it a unique proposal, and among them the most remarkable, by far, is found on your screen. And it is that as I have indicated previously, it is based on Paperwhite technology, which we have already seen in other Kindle models. And what do I mean by this? Indeed, surely you have already noticed: we are talking about an electronic ink screena technology that, due to its peculiarities, offers a much greater autonomy than the screens that we usually use.

Consequently, and although Amazon does not reveal the battery capacity of the Kindle Scribe, it does define its more than extensive autonomy in the following terms:

«For the reading function, the battery can last up to 12 weeks on a single chargebased on a reading habit of half an hour a day with the wireless connection disconnected and the light brightness set to level 13. For the writing function, the battery can last up to 3 weeks on a single charge, based on a typing habit of half an hour a day with wireless off and light brightness set to level 13. Battery life may vary and may be less than stated based on device usage and other factors , such as content annotation.»

More interesting (and certainly much more specific) is the information on its loading speed, of around seven hours connected to a computer via a USB-C cable, but that can be reduced to Less than 2.5 hours connected to a 9W USB-C power adapter.

Kindle Scribe is the best Kindle we’ve built to date, emulating the experience of reading and writing on real paper.”, says Eric Saarnio, vice president of Amazon Devices International. “It’s inspired by Kindle clients who have added billions of notes and highlights to books over the years, and it’s great for reviewing and annotating documents, managing your to-do list, or drafting big ideas. It also offers all the Kindle benefits that users know and love, like millions of available titles, adjustable fonts, premium reading features, and weeks and weeks of battery life, all with the benefit of a big screen.”.

Personally, I cannot say yet whether or not this Kindle Scribe is the best Kindle in history, but there is no doubt that yes, it is one of the most innovative in the history of the Amazon eReader and, I say even more, of the general history of these devices, a market that is not very large, but that does have a fairly loyal audience, and that possibly finds this novelty brought to the sector by Amazon very gratifying.
