Latency and gaming in the cloud: 5 tips to reduce it and improve the experience

For many, gaming in the cloud has become an excellent way to enjoy their favorite titles, and it is perfectly understandable, because in the end this option eliminates from the equation one of the most important problems when it comes to gaming hardware, the cost of the components.

It is very easy to understand. When we run a game locally, it is our PC that must assume all the workload that it generates, which means that if we do not meet the minimum requirements, it is very likely that it will not work, or that it will work in fits and starts and with poor quality. very low graphics The game in the cloud free us totally from this problemsince the execution of the video games is not carried out on our equipment, but on a server.

That server does the heavy lifting and streams the game to our team so we can enjoy it. we will only need a very light client and a good internet connection. The latter is very important, since it will largely determine the experience we will have, and no, it does not need to be high speed, but it does need to be stable and have low latency.

We already talked about this topic at the time when we saw three things we need to enjoy gaming in the cloud, but today I want to focus on an important topic, latency and how we can reduce it. Those of you who read us regularly already know that latency is the delay that occurs between the two-way communications that are established between our PC and the server. If this is too high, that communication will be delayed, and both our actions and changes to the game will be reflected late, which in extreme cases can make it impossible to play.

How to reduce latency to better enjoy cloud gaming

  1. Choose the server closest to your country: Although it is a detail that the average user is clear about and understands perfectly, there are still people who do not fully assimilate it, and it is a pity because choosing the wrong server can completely ruin our experience when playing in the cloud. This has a very simple explanation, and that is that if we communicate with a server that is in Europe, the distance will be less, and the latency too, but the opposite will occur when communicating with a server in the United States or China.
  2. Use a wired connection: these tend to have greater stability, are not affected by external interference, and typically offer lower latency. In some cases going from a wireless to a wired connection can make a huge difference in terms of latency, especially when using Wi-Fi 4 connections.
  3. Switch to Wi-Fi 5: It is a standard that, although it is no longer considered state-of-the-art, is still capable of very high speeds, suffers less interference than Wi-Fi 4, and has lower latency, as long as we stay at a reasonable distance from the router. so that the signal strength is good enough.
  4. Adjust bandwidth consumption: This is especially important in those cases in which the Internet connection is not very fast, and also when we are using relatively old routers with multiple connected devices. For example, for cloud gaming with GeForce Now, a bandwidth of 50 Mbps is recommended, but 15 Mbps is the minimum.
  5. Change the router: It is a somewhat drastic measure, and that is why we have put it last. A very old router can cause high latency problems because its hardware has become outdated, and therefore does not have enough RAM or a powerful enough processor to handle a workload such as cloud gaming, and that’s all. it can be worse if we have multiple devices connected at the same time.
