LG Display wants to launch its first transparent OLED TV in 2023

The Korean manufacturer has been surprising us in recent years with its family of transparent OLED screens. This type of panel has been focused on a clearly commercial profile, although LG is considering launching the the company’s first transparent OLED TV.

In 2020, the Korean manufacturer collaborated with Xiaomi to present the first transparent OLED TV to celebrate its tenth anniversary. We talk about the Xiaomi Mi TV LUX Transparent Editiona device with a very elegant appearance, but whose high price weighed down sales significantly.

But technology has evolved and production costs have been reduced, making a product with these characteristics no longer a solution aimed at the largest pockets. And for this reason, LG is seriously thinking about the possibility of launching its first transparent OLED TV.

LG Display proposes to LG Electronics to launch the company’s first transparent OLED TV

Transparent OLED Smart TV

Now, as reported by The Elec, LG Display has proposed to its parent company, LG Electronics, the possibility of launching a transparent LG OLED Smart TV aimed at the consumer market. Or what is the same: a model that you can check like the rest of the company’s televisions.

The proposal that LG Display has made consists of a smart TV with a 55-inch transparent OLED screen to the Home Entertainment Company of LG Electronics, its television business unit.

According to the information that has been published, the idea is that this transparent LG OLED TV will have the panel fixed to the frame, just like the XIaomi Mi LUX. Regarding the features of this model, LG Display offers a transparent OLED panel with reinforced glass coating to offer a more solid and durable set. On other occasions they have shown roll-up models in which the panel was hidden in the structure, but in this case they opt for a more traditional system to lower costs.

It would arrive in 2023

Transparent OLED Smart TV

AND LG Electronics is seriously considering taking this proposal forward. In the event that the project went ahead, the development of this transparent LG OLED Smart TV would begin in mid-2022 so that, in all probability, it would be presented at the CES in Las Vegas in 2023 and that it would reach the market that same year.

To say that it is not the first time we have heard that LG Display wants its transparent OLED panels to stop being a luxury product and limited to the commercial environment. The problem is that, the greater the transparency, the higher the voltage required, causing the panel to suffer high temperatures, with the problem that leads to blue pixels. But of course, with the Brightness Booster technology, if they manage to implement it in a transparent OLED model, you could solve this problem.

At the moment it is just a rumor, but it would make sense for the Korean firm to surprise with a model with these characteristics. During the last edition of CES we were surprised with some very curious models, like the LG StanbyME, a battery-powered TV that you can move around the house. And the idea of a transparent OLED Smart TV, which would look great in the living room, can be a whim to take into account. Especially if the 55″ model has a price that is not excessively high.
