LG introduces UltraGear 17G90Q, its very first gaming computer

On the menu: RTX 3080 Max-Q, 11th generation Tiger Lake CPU … and a funny ultra-fast panel, but with disappointing resolution.

As astonishing as it may sound with his indisputable experience in the universe of laptops, LG had never before offered a machine designed entirely for gamers. This is now done with the UltraGear 17G90Q. LG presents us with a surprisingly thin and rather muscular device that it calls its “first gaming laptop”.

It is a beautiful beast with a 17-inch screen that promises to be quite exceptional responsiveness. The panel is indeed capable of reaching an impressive 300 Hz refresh rate. Enough to click heads without compromise on the most demanding titles of the eSport scene without the slightest complex. If you are fond of titles like Counter Strike: Global Offensive, this device will suit you perfectly.

On the other hand, to achieve such a refresh rate, it is necessarily necessary to make some concessions. For its part, LG has made the somewhat curious choice to cut down on the resolution. Indeed, the future owners of this UltraGear will have to be satisfied with an IPS panel in 1080p. It’s a far cry from the machines it will compete with, and a bit disappointing at the moment. For comparison, ASUS, for example, offers QHD resolution on its ROG 17.3 ”300Hz laptops. This UltraGear will therefore not be the ideal platform to pay tribute to immersive and visually grandiose titles.

High-end components

It is all the more astonishing that this machine seems to be armed to aim higher. Indeed, it is equipped with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 Max-Q, the ultimate GPU in the laptop ecosystem. Was this a thermal performance issue? This is a possibility, since the brand does not yet have a lot of experience on machines exclusively dedicated to gaming.

Alongside this graphics card, the machine will be entitled to an Intel 11th generation processor from the Tiger Lake H series. We do not yet know the exact model, but we already know that it will be supported by 32 GB of RAM. Adding that to the RTX 3080 gives you more than enough arsenal to run any AAA title on the market beyond 60 FPS – at least in theory.

A machine to play, that’s all

On the other hand, it will certainly be the only real use of this device. When it comes to content consumption, that’s a different story. With a 17-inch screen at 1080p, we can expect a fairly mixed viewing experience. You can find much larger resolutions on smaller devices today. For comparison, the iPad Pro has a 13-inch panel in… 2732 * 2048.

The same goes for editors, graphic designers, illustrators, photographers, 3D modelers and other artists. They will clearly be handicapped by the resolution and the amount of RAM capped at 32 GB. But that was not LG’s goal anyway; the Korean firm wanted to produce a machine for gamers, and it is done with a laptop that assumes its concept without compromise.

The advantage is that this lack of high resolution panel or OLED technology will certainly lower the bill. A detail far from negligible, knowing that equivalent machines are used to happily exceeding 3000 € for the most extravagant models.

As for the rest of the technical sheet, we can be satisfied with the presence of a large battery. Its 93 Wh should give it a fairly comfortable autonomy – all things considered for a portable machine that carries an RTX 3080, of course. The other good surprise is the very complete connectivity. This UltraGear will be entitled to two USB-C ports (including a USB-4), two USB-A ports, an RJ45 Ethernet port and a jack. There is also a microSD slot and even a full-size HDMI socket, two small details that are always particularly welcome.

The price of the beast is still unknown, but it is only partly postponed. LG certainly plans to unveil the latest details at CES 2022, which will kick off on January 4.
